Beschreibung

The time has come to believe that there is a trend in present generation once again to return to barbaric and brutal ways of invasions on the human civility in the name of religions and cast feelings when the world had advanced this far, even if not in its ultimate sense, in the field of knowledge in all areas including scientific and technical fields as well as in upholding Human Rights which is internationally acclaimed.

In the past religions helped to strategically complement wisdom in human values and this is evident from the teachings of most of the religions active today. However, there are multitudes, which do not appreciate these teachings or care to learn them but yet active in engaging in immoral and inhuman channels in the names of religions.

This is a humble attempt by the author to introduce the largest religion of the world today, in such a way that any person can comprehend the values of life’s basics, like the Father of the Indian Nation Mahatma Gandhi did.

Foreword

A shortcut through the Bible is a simple instruction manual to understand the Holy Bible and its contents better. Many Christians unfortunately do not care to read the Holy Bible regularly. Some of them study some Bible verses when they were in the Sunday School and Vacation Bible Class. On the other hand there are some who read the Bible commentaries in order to understand the Holy Bible better.

This book is an attempt to help Christians to understand the Holy Bible better. It gives us valuable information about the dates when the different books of the Holy Bible were written during the span of about 1500 years. The first five books of the Old Testament known as the Pentateuch or the Books of Moses were written around 1400 B.C. The New Testament books were written in the first century A.D., mostly in the second half of the first century. The author has not confused us with the conflicting questions regarding the date of the actual writing of each book. Let it remain a topic for theological students to debate.

Prof. Dr. Christopher Thomas who has authored other books such as Learning about Life, An Ideal Society, & Winning Wisdom has penned this simple book for the common man to get preliminary knowledge about the Holy Bible. Bible Verses given under the title Practical Precepts in Chapter-1 is very useful for people to get comfort when they are in trouble.

The learned author has taken pains to verify the dates and details given in this book. I urge the clergy and laity alike to make proper use of this book. If we want to be good Christians we should increase our knowledge regarding the Holy Bible. Great people like Mahatma Gandhi made use of the Bible and its teachings.

As the habit of reading in general has considerably decreased in our society the parents today should put pressure on their youngsters to continue to study the Holy Bible in order to be successful in life.

May Almighty God bless us as we read through this informative book.

Preface

When anything in creation fulfills its very purpose of existence, it brings glory to God, as everything comes from God alone, everything lives by His power, and everything is created and sustained for His glory.

There were and there are, different religious beliefs and practices existing in this world. Usually for every individual, theirs is the right religion. But at the same point, a large number of people – Christians and non-Christians - regard Jesus Christ as one such revered teacher who enlightened the world with His messages of love and peace. One such example is Gandhiji. Through this small volume, I am trying to connect the past to the preset in a fast mode. This book is meant for innocuous reading by anyone who wishes to know the history of Christianity from roots till the life of Jesus Christ and beyond.

There is no other book in the world, other than The Holy Bible, that has influenced the life of so many people through history of the vast humanity this far and still going strong. It tells us volumes on God’s love, peace, mercy and care for humans, the wonderful ways generations were led to arrive till our times, incident by incident, chronologically, and authentically which no other world history book describes substantially. In other words, Bible shows us the step-by-step development of human pedigree through ages and the outcome for man in submitting himself totally at the feet of the Almighty God.

According to the Bible, the first man Adam, because of his sinning against God, messed up the scheme God devised for His creation, human beings. Consequently God removed Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Aden. But God in His mercy, decided to redeem the humanity. So, God chose Abraham as Father of a particular generation to be a tool for bringing these people closer to him.

Jesus Christ is of the posterity of Abraham through whom God has implemented His plan of redemption for the mankind. Jesus was born just about two thousand years ago from our times in ancient Palestine. As a man He would leave His village of Nazareth to go out into the Jewish homeland with a radical message. The chain of events set off by His preaching would result in a new world religion called Christianity, a faith practiced by more than one third of the world population today and is in the steady increase. His birth, life and teachings are deliberated through the four Gospels of the Holy Bible. Traditions that resulted from Jesus’ teachings have changed the outlook of modern man, of God and His love for mankind for whose salvation God has sacrificed His own son on the cross of Calvary. The central theme of the Bible is prophecies and their culmination attained through act of salvation of humanity by Jesus Christ, the Son of God, through His death.

The Bible has two portions – The Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament is the history of Israelites genealogically threaded to Father Abraham. New Testament is the history of Jesus Christ and His people belonging to the New Israel, transiting through the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and culminating in His crucifixion and resurrection on the third day as well as the acts of His Apostles whose mission was in spreading His messages as Word of God to the wider world and to stabilize them in faith. Thus, the redemption of humanity prophesied in the Old Testament period was translated into reality in the New Testament period, because of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Thus for Christians, the New Testament has indeed become a certainty in the person of Jesus Christ. The Present land of Israel is also were known by names such as Canaan and Palestine – the Cradle of Christianity – for it was there that Jesus Christ was born. I do not dare comparing the humble effort of this study with the Bible at any rate. It is also not possible to tap every important event in the Bible and paraphrase them in any form as it is difficult as measuring the waters of all seas or counting the sands of all shorelines. The scope of this book is limited to familiarizing the teachings of Jesus Christ to those earnest to know about it, without going through the Bible elaborately. My target readers comprise also non-Christians with a desire in enhancing their knowledge on Christianity, its brief history and the essential teachings of Jesus Christ, for the purpose of shunning misapprehension or ignorance of any nature to enable cordial living in a pluralistic society.

I intend to begin with the history of humanity from the earlier times, traversing through the Old Testament periods, crossing through the Inter-testament times, and arriving at the New Testament periods of Jesus Christ. Special attention is given to include all the important events during the period of Public Ministry of Jesus although I could afford only quick glance and fast steps at some of the routines of the Master. My esteemed readers are requested to go through the Biblical portions noted in brackets to get an account of the actual stories. All these portions are copied from the Bible as is and hence you may find them as the old-time English usage and not in the contemporary form in use. However, they carry same meaning; in fact help us take a dive in to the times of the Lord and adding up a treasured flavor.

The growth of Christianity after Jesus Christ is very briefly told as my focus is on the main events during the life and death of Jesus and not in highlighting any particular purpose or prospects of any Christian denominational thoughts. The Bible reassures that For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. My esteemed readers are requested not to account this as a tool for religious propagation or as an initiative to convert any soul into it. This is just an attempt to enlighten the wonderful ideas of love, peace, brotherhood and service to humanity as advocated by the great Master of all times, Jesus Christ. Trust, this book in it, will help to carry the message of peace and goodwill to mankind and permeate the hearts and souls of all my esteemed readers.

Prologue

"Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all that you acquire, acquire understanding." ~ Proverb, 4:7

Long ago, more than 2000 years behind us, on a chill and starry winter night, a man named Joseph journeyed with Mary his pregnant wife from Nazareth, a village in Galilee 20 miles south-east of modern Haifa in Palestine, to Bethlehem of Judea. They found no room at the inn, but the innkeeper allowed them to spend the night in the stable. There, Mary gave birth to the infant Jesus. This infant was to be the Messiah, the redeemer of the chosen people of God.

The Public Ministry of Jesus began at the age of 30 years and lasted only about three and half years, when He was arrested and sentenced to death by crucifixion, in the name of blasphemy of God and the Jewish traditions, by the keepers of the then church in order to safeguard their positions. However, the birth, preaching and passion of Jesus went on according to the Prophesies of the Old Testament and that sanctifies His reverence as the Savior of the World.

The history of Jesus does not portrait him as the founder of Christianity at any time, but as the remedial sacrificial incarnation for the sins of all human races, prearranged by Jehovah God. He was very simple in life, highly commendable in teachings, and truthful in all dealings; yet ordinary men found faults in him, crucified and killed him, only for him to resurrect victoriously on the third day according to God’s pre-plan and to establish Godly Holy Spirit on earth.

Jesus’ preaching and subsequent death upon the cross has inspired a new religion called Christianity. Hanging from the cross, deserted by nearly all of His followers, His dying words were an anguished cry Father, why have you forsaken me? But, the birth and ministry of Jesus was God’s plan for the salvation of the entire mankind and no one would reverse this decision.

The story of Jesus’ death and resurrection on the third day, as predicted by Jesus himself, forms the very foundation of Christian faith. History has evidence for Jesus’ life and death and today, His followers – namely Christians - rank first in world religious population chart.

Tracing from ancient history and incidents, including the New Testament, which is the substantial first-century source of information about the life and preaching, here is the story of Jesus, the Son of God, who came into the world with a mission, retold in an orderly and unique style. History has it and the testaments have them in most clear terms. Let us delve into the ocean of this extravagant episode of Salvation of Humanity by Sacrifice, after taking a quick look of the past in the Old Testament times and before, and approaching the life of this great world teacher with utmost reverence and salutation.

About the Author

Introduction

The Religion: Christianity

Christianity is the religion of Love of God and Love of Man as revealed in Jesus Christ. The God Jehovah is revered by Christians all over the world as the Supreme Being, supreme in persona, supreme in nature, creatively focused, morally highest, sacramental and redemptive. Christianity is the offspring of Judaism which also serves the same god.

For several centuries after Prophet Noah, Jews had been eagerly awaiting the advent of their Messiah - redeemer (and they do still). During those days, Palestine was in the torments of a serious political and national crisis. Jews were opposing the Roman rule. Their anguish had reached the peak during the time of then Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar. Jews desperately nourished their expectation of a Messiah, the liberator of the ‘Chosen People - Israelites’ of the Almighty Jehovah, as they believed. Their redeemer had to soon deliver them from the yoke of oppression and sufferings like Moses did. Prophecies relating to the appearance of the Messiah had already been written in their scripture Torah (which forms the first five books of the old testament of Bible). The messianic mission of Jesus, however, was to be quite different; He was not destined to liberate the Jews from the Romans by the ‘power of sword’ and in the form of an adventurer like Moses but instead, by preaching the possibilities of salvation for all humanity.

That was just so the occasion Jesus was born before the death of King Herod the Great in 4 BC in Bethlehem, after whom the Christian faith has come into existence. There is considerable doubt about the exact date, but it was considered to be in the month of Ethanim (September-October) of the year 2 BC as per present calculations based on Gregorian calendar. The popular date of December 25 as the day of Jesus’ birth therefore has no basis in Scripture or in History. According to one theory, Christmas began to be celebrated only in the 4th Century AD. In the 5th Century, western Church ordered a feast to be established in memory of Jesus’ birth, on the day of the ‘Mithraicrites (of the birth
