Author’s Note
If you’re expecting a book full of wordy, long-winded explanations that first provides you with the information you need and then proceeds to restate that same information in three different ways for the single purpose of adding pages to their dissertation, then this isn’t the book for you.
I have too much respect for both your intelligence and your time to do that.
Mastering the Art of Media Messaging
will provide you with a wealth of concise information, materials, formulas and examples to effectively identify and then utilize the most powerful communication, information and motivational tool ever conceived by Man.
In 21st Century America, Media has evolved as a commanding influence permeating every aspect of our waking world.
It has the power to topple Presidents; neutralize armies and create or destroy billion dollar corporations.
By definition, Media is a process through which any organized, mass dissemination of information is conveyed.
Such would include all forms of print media (newspapers, magazines, periodicals etc) as well as the electronic media, specifically, radio, television, feature films and the Internet, etc.
However, it’s the purpose of this Survivor’s Guide
to provide decision makers with the insights they need to effectively, efficiently, openly, honestly and authoritatively interact with the one form of Media that affects America, (especially corporate America) the most.... The News Media.
Media is not the enemy
... it’s a tool ... and this guide will teach how to put that tool to good use.
Chapter One:
MEDIA’S HIDDEN SECRETS
In 1963, at the age of 16, I attended a communications seminar held at the then Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. It was the pre-cable TV era
and the attendees were discussing the revolution in communications awaiting our futures.
However, what I remember most about that conference was a banner that stretched from one end of the ballroom the other. It read, MASS MEDIA MOLDS THE MINDS OF MODERN MAN
.
Truer words have never been written.
We live in a different world than our forefathers. Super Sonic transports speed our travel ... computers speed our thoughts and media permeates every aspect of our lives.
It never ceases to amaze me though, how individuals who have overcome the impossible by successfully building multi-million dollar industries, or managing multi-national companies or creating multi-billion dollar global markets, stand frozen in fear at the prospect of being confronted by the news media. However, those fears are not without some foundation.
Recently, I had breakfast with the CEO of one of America’s top fortune 500 companies. He was frustrated because of an interview he had given was reported inaccurately. The facts used weren’t false ... but they weren’t true either. The Reporter had chosen to use half-truths
in order to taint and titillate the information the executive had provided to paint the short term prospects of his company in a negative fashion. The resulting article caused the company’s stock values to suffer resulting in an over night loss of literally tens of millions of dollars to the company’s stockholders.
Sadly, this is not uncommon. Recently, a false internet rumor caused the stock of a major airline to free-fall from thirteen dollars a share to below three dollars a share within a four hour period. The stock recovered once the rumor was proven inaccurate, but in the meantime thousands of
