Retired Learning Addict--Book Lover--Cat Lover--Dog Lover--Drinker of dry wine and stout beer--I am older than 25 but still feel that young. The older I get, the more I realize how much I have in common with everyone else. I prefer to write about the dramas of regular people, ordinary people--not the rich and famous. The unseen and unacknowledged lives sweated out and rejoiced over and agonized through are much more interesting. I gave up on my dream of being a professional baseball player long ago. But I still have dreams and every day that that's true is a blessed day.

And yet, the most simple and elegant manifestations of the material are often catalysts for a resurgence of belief; hopeful signs are never more cherished than when we are aching deeply with grief.

I have heard stories about people asking God or angels for signs--actual, tangible signs--that their beloved is living happily in the spirit world. Perhaps the most elegant and simple sign ever requested is flowers. While I want to believe in the continuation of life through incarnations, my feet of clay--along with a family legacy of agnosticism--make me susceptible to doubt. My feeling after reading stories of people who prayed for flowers--and got them--was that these things happen to other people, not me. Still, I suspected that sooner or later, I would have a chance to settle
