About this ebook

Sprint! is about four girls whose talent, hard work, and achievements have landed them the prime spots on the USA 4 x 400 women’s Olympic relay team. Individually, they are so fast many expect them to run directly into world history by smashing the current world record into oblivion. They are indeed poised to run into world history—but not in a way anyone anticipates. Each of these girls has an undisclosed and unusual event in her background that surfaces during the race when she is met by unexpected, extreme adversity. The girls’ stories are interwoven into the fabric of their historic quest for the gold—and one girl’s encounter with Christianity.

Ronnie Stout

Ron Stout was raised in Los Angeles, California, and earned his BA in pre-medicine at Occidental College. Following two Korean tours as a navy officer on a destroyer, he attended LIFE Bible College, majoring in biblical Greek and theology and graduating with a BTh. With children arriving, Ron worked in a corporate office in Los Angeles while attending USC in the evening as a graduate student in the School of Business. Ron and his family then moved to San Diego County, where Ron spent 21 years in the stock market as a broker, a branch manager of an NYSE member firm, and an independent registered investment advisor. Many of the experiences in Fireflies occurred while Ron and his wife, Corinne, were living on their beautiful ranch in Julian, California. They then moved to Arizona, where Ron studied agriculture at the University of Arizona. The Stouts plunged into apple orchards and the Cider Mill, a highly visible retail operation on Interstate 10 at Willcox, Arizona, for 22 years. Today, Ron and Corinne have retired on their Arizona ranch. Their daughter, Robin, and her family live nearby.

    The Setting

The premise of this fictional novel is that the financial burden of building new facilities for the Games in a different nation every four years has become both astronomical and prohibitive. Instead, member nations have pooled their resources to build a super stadium among the ruins of the original Olympic Games in Olympia, Greece. Now, although the Games will be hosted by a different nation every four years, they will always be held in Olympia, Greece.

    Chapter 1

    The Day Before

Pamela Sutherland stood with her hands on her hips, intently watching the girls execute the passing drills for the umpteenth time. Jones to Johnson to Miller to Smith. Yes, she thought, it even has a ring to it. Yes, I think I have the rotation right—I want Andrea out at the beginning with her blazing start, building a lead. Then I want speed on the second leg, endurance on the third leg, and the best to bring it home. Yes, I have it right.

They were outside the stadium on the lush grass in their working sweats—no identification, no emblems, no colors, no names—nothing to identify them. In fact, no one even knew who the girls were—just four runners practicing their passing.

At first Pam had Loree Johnson as her starter, passing to Andrea, but she flipped them last week after watching them work out. Andrea was a real quarter-miler while both Loree and Megan were running the distance competitively for the first time. Pam had received some criticism for not sticking with bona fide quarter-milers. Nevertheless, she remembered the USOC coaches switching a 3,000-meter runner to 1,500 meters in 1952 at Helsinki and running a young man named Robert McMillen. That switch resulted in a silver medal in world record time. McMillan almost won it—six inches or so separated him from the gold—but he had no chance in the 3,000.

Pam smiled to herself as she viewed a few spectators standing around watching the drills. Little did they know they were looking at four of the fastest women in the world. Tomorrow, she thought, their names will be written in the record books forever.

Pam looked up and saw her gorgeous hunk—the Chief of the Greek Security Force, Paulus Marangakis, in full uniform walking toward her. She knew him as Paul Marano, fellow student at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Her heart skipped a beat, as it had in his presence since the first time she met him. He flashed his engaging smile and quipped, Hi there, gorgeous.

Hello yourself, good looking, Pamela countered with a broad smile.

Are these the young ladies you asked me about?

Yes. In front of you over there, Pam announced with mock pomposity as she waved her arm with a flourish toward the runners, is the greatest collection of silver since the discovery of the Nevada Mother Lode. Nary a golden nugget among them. This was the second Olympics for three of them and they all were silver medal winners, but none of them had ever won any gold. Pam boldly predicted, That is all going to change tomorrow.

I hope so, Paul remarked. Pam, here are the briefs I got on your girls. As far as official records are concerned, none of them have any issues with anyone. They are clean. He handed the cards to Pam.

Thanks for looking into this for me, Paul. I just wanted to be sure.

No problem. I’ll text you after the race, Paul responded as he turned and sauntered away.

Pam smiled. Paul had picked up
