CHAPTER ONE
Having ascertained much in regard to dark magic and ancient lore, I was not surprised and yet still repulsed at the sight I beheld beyond the ancient metal door. Emaciated and pale bodies hung there, their toes nearly scraping the dirty floor, suspended by iron hooks through the neck, their weight supported wholly by dislocated jawbones. Currents of air did not reach this far below the ground, yet the naked bodies swayed slightly as if touched by a breeze. The lantern I carried was near to dying, as I had reached a depth to where the fire and I could hardly breathe.
Against all better judgment, I reached for the great iron handle, my fingers clasping its cold length and pulled, gently at first and then upon finding resistance, much harder. It moved not at all. I lowered the lantern's light to the door and saw the oddly-shaped keyhole. Like a fool, I reached into my pocket, removing the key and holding it in front of my face.
'Nose troubles' is what my father would have called it, my insatiable curiosity. At one time, I believed that being too nosy is what caused his death in the end, that and drink, but now I knew the truth. Mother had not come out of the old house since his passing, sitting alone, singing to herself near the fireplace. Once he had found the things, nothing else held importance to him, only the solution to ending their existence. He had left his job, having spent twenty-odd years at the place, without a word, simply walked out with his coworkers staring, their jaws hanging slack. Not many of the townsfolk liked my father, it was true, his wiry and pale frame begged to be ridiculed, of which I inherited both. The sharp, hawk-like nose came from my mother’s side, which my father had pointed out on a consistent basis. I had learned much about the man and I no longer disliked him. I pitied him instead.
On the day that my father took his life, a brisk day in October, I was away at a favorite bookstore of mine, not far from his place of employment. It was a hobby that I had acquired from him, in fact, the love of books and reading. It mattered not the subject or genre, fiction or no, I had always thirsted for knowledge or adventure.
My God in heaven…
the clerk had whispered as her eyes moved to the window of the store. Taking
