About this ebook

Its only because of her special abilities, Aubree Winters is tracked down by the FBI and forced, by circumstances, to assist her former partner and lover in seeking out a vigilante, one she believes should be left to his task. In taking the rapists and murderers off the streets, he's doing what the FBI should be doing. And, yet, even one innocent victim is too much guilt for her to bear.

Laura Payeur

Wife, mother, grandmother with a passion for writing murder mystery, crime, and a bit of dark humor. Most of my characters are based on the real-life personalities of people I know and have known in my life. Although, thankfully, rarely are my tales based on real-life events. For example, my husband is still alive and well (for the most part).

He'll be on the first flight out in the morning. Should be there by mid-morning. You'd better be there to meet him. The voice on the other end of the phone wasn't pleasant. It wasn't angry either. It was indifferent. Exactly the way she remembered Hennesy. Do you understand?

Yeah, I'll be there, Aubree Winters said. She understood perfectly. There was truly no living off the grid, not for her. They would find her when they were good and ready. And they were ready. Of course, they'd had a push.

I was told to give this to you. Allister McCaffrey handed her a badge and I.D. The exact same ones in the exact same wallet, black with slightly curled corners. He was dragging along a small blue carry-along and with a large brown leather briefcase, that appeared to be new, the strap slung over his shoulder. Not exactly incognito, she thought. He wore jeans and a dark green cardigan, not his typical style. His suit, she was sure, must have been neatly folded in his carry-along.

No gun? She smirked, squinting her gold-green eyes. Her wild auburn hair fluttered around her face. She couldn't see the slight flecks of silver, but she knew they were there. The warm October breeze wouldn't last much longer. A day or two, maybe. Indian Summer was nearly over.

Don't push your luck, he warned. As far as The Bureau is concerned, you're a consultant. Only.

That's all right. As you might already know, we have our own form of justice here. I've got my own piece. The small town justice thing was just a bit, but she did have her own gun. It was a habit she wasn't about to break.

Bree, don't go pushing any buttons on this one. They'd rather see you in a federal prison than running around loose, he said. She was far from being a threat to society. Even Al knew that.

"If that's what they really wanted, Al, I'd be behind bars and not standing here having this pleasant conversation with you. She tucked the badge into the back pocket of her jeans. So, why did you call me? You're capable. You don't need my help."

You wouldn't think so, would you? He shifted his small suitcase from one hand to the other as they walked. Her car was parked in a lot around the corner from the airport. It wasn't a high traffic area, but she still preferred to be able to get in and out quickly. But you know we do our homework. You know the people here. I imagine you've earned the respect of a few. I can use that.

You mean you can use me. She laughed. Who would've thought.

Don't push your luck on this, Bree. I'm telling you, he warned her, but his expression didn't change.

Yeah, I get it. Shoot one bad guy and I end up on the F.B.I.'s Most Wanted list. Christ, Al, I can't believe you can look me in the eyes and give me that shit. Its a fucking joke. She wondered now how much their partnership, their entire relationship, had meant to him.

We're trained to shoot to kill, Bree. He stood up straighter, trying to get the most out of his large frame and hovered over her.

    So, I missed. She shrugged.

You blew out his fucking knee cap.

    I thought he was kneeling.

    You purposely disabled him.

And that's bad, why? She stopped, spinning on her heels to look at him. "I made sure... or at least I thought I did... that he would be in prison for the rest of his life. And because I didn't kill him, they let
