I. Introduction and Acknowledgements
Program Related Investments (PRIs) are a powerful and flexible tool to add to your grantmaker’s toolkit. A PRI is a loan or other type of investment made by a foundation to support a charitable purpose. The investment can be counted toward a foundation’s distribution requirement as long as it serves a charitable purpose and meets a few basic requirements (criteria for PRIs are listed later).
The best part is that the funds generally come back to the foundation to be used for other PRIs or for grants! For small foundations, PRIs can be an effective way to leverage the impact of limited assets.
This ASF Primer can be helpful if you just want to find out about PRIs; are ready to move forward and make your first PRI; or have already made one and want to refine your process and get some tips.
ASF is extremely grateful to Francie Brody of Brody • Weiser • Burns, for offering her knowledge and experience on PRIs and reviewing drafts of this Primer. ASF also wishes to thank the following colleagues for their invaluable assistance:
• Christa Velasquez at the Annie E. Casey Foundation, who drafted an early version of this Primer;
• Jan Jaffe, founder and project leader, GrantCraft, who allowed us to draw upon Grantcraft’s excellent guide on PRIs;
• Lisa Richter of GPS Capital Partners for
