    Feast of Lead

Rolling the empty .45 casing between thumb and forefinger, Dex Carlton stared at the head-stamp on the empty brass reading the words stamped there. At first the brass had been hot to the touch blistering his skin. Dex welcomed the pain pinching it between thumb and forefinger while it cooled. Only after it started to cool did he start to roll it back and forth.

Dex short for Dexter Carlton had a sour feeling in the pit of his stomach.

The only sound in the room was the sound of his breathing.

If he bothered to look he could find the rest of the casings scattered around the room. Five hammering shots had rang out in the space of three heartbeats. The heavy .45 caliber Colt, had spewed flames and lead throughout the dirty kitchen. A kick to the kitchen’s flimsy door had gained him entrance into the kitchen. The kid was supposed to be fast so surprise would give him an edge.

When he saw Dex he knew what Dex had come for. Paco’s last mistake this side of hell was grabbing for the laser-sighted Glock model 17 that was stuffed into the waistband of his pants. His face was going slack in shock and disbelief even while trying to grab and tear the Glock free.

Dex’s first shot blasted through Paco’s elbow turning his forearm into so much useless meat. The .45 continued tracking up Paco’s body. Two more hammering blasts from the .45 turned his heart into a rapidly draining bag. Falling to his knees, Paco was dead before his face hit the floor.

Dex turned the .45 as he hunting for the remaining occupants of the room. The gun barely stopping as he fed the woman at the kitchen table a .45 round to the head, blood brains and bone shards decorated the kitchen wall behind her. The ten-year-old had just time to start to scream when the last round caught him square in the chest.

Letting the cold casing drop, Dex gathered up what he had come for. Paco thought he could skim off some from the profits, looking around the grimy kitchen Dex knew the money hadn’t gone to improve his families living arrangement. Greasy dishes with caked on food where piled in the sink while cockroaches climbed over everything.

It was one of Paco’s little playmates that had let it slip that Paco was running through money like it was quicksilver setting tongues wagging as parties become the order of the day.

Word had quickly reached Dex, setting him on his way to visit Paco to express his disapproval at what was happening.

The money made a tiny lump in his pocket. Walking out Dex left the door open behind him letting the light from the kitchen illuminate the scene of violent death. It would serve as a warning to the others to TOW the line.

Silence gripped the little cluster of houses; as the neighborhood held its breath. In this place violence and low-level crime were an everyday occurrence. When the big dog prowled the street the little dog’s stayed in their kennels and kept
