    Introduction

So you want to sell on eBay, but you’re not sure what to do. Hopefully this guide will help you feel more confident about making some extra cash from all those bits and pieces you have lying around the house, but no longer use.

I had been buying items from eBay for several years before I actually took the plunge and decided to start selling as well. That was several years ago and according to many of my friends I have now become their eBay guru – any eBay questions they have, they come to me.

Now I am not going to make you an eBay millionaire – there are heaps of other books out there that promise to do that – rather I hope to provide you with some useful hints and tips to maximise your eBay selling experience.

One of the non-monetary benefits of selling your unwanted items on eBay is that you are helping to recycle items, which might otherwise be thrown away and end up in landfill. This is the warm and fuzzy aspect, as opposed to the cold, hard cash perspective!

For the purposes of this book I am assuming that you already have an eBay account, even if you have only used it to buy things or never used it at all. However if you are an eBay novice then you will be required to go through the eBay registration process and you will also need to create a PayPal account. See Chapter 1 for information on this.

If you already have an eBay and PayPal account set up, then you can jump straight to Chapter 2.

This is not a step-by-step guide to create a listing – eBay itself has many guides in their Community section and they also offer step-by-step tutorials.

This book aims to assist you to make the most money for your unwanted items as easily as possible. You will have to invest some time into selling, but you should be able to do all the things you need to do when the kids are in bed and you have no distractions.

This book deals specifically with selling on eBay Australia and all references to eBay are referring to eBay Australia. Most of the references in this book apply to the use of eBay on a personal computer or laptop. There may be some slight differences when using eBay on a tablet, netbook or smartphone.

    WARNING: eBay can become addictive…

I often joke with my husband that one day he will come home and the house will be empty, because I will have sold everything we own on eBay!

Welcome all MDeBs (Mum and Dad eBayers – pronounced em-deebs) and I hope you enjoy my book!

Chapter 1 - Starting from scratch

    Registering an eBay account

To set up a new eBay account you will need to register with eBay here. Registration is free and simple; however you must be over 18. They will require a name and address (physical and email), a User ID and password. Your name, address and email address will not be displayed anywhere on the public site, however your User ID will, so think carefully about what user name you choose. You will probably find that your first few choices are unavailable, because someone else is already using them - try adding unusual characters or numbers to your initial idea and you may find it works. For ideas on how to create a great User ID, click here. Remember you are not setting up an online store, so you don’t need to choose a
