About this ebook

What do you get when you take a group of relatively inexperienced campers out in the Florida backwoods? In a word, trouble.

Thirteen-year-old Zack disappears in the middle of the night, more than half of the campers become mysteriously ill, and a hurricane takes an unexpected turn in their direction, leaving the group vulnerable.

Group leader Chet Harrigan, a former gang leader, is among the sick, but he's in charge as the bad weather hits camp. Join Chet and his group of 10 to 16 year olds on their adventure in the wilds of Florida, where there are gators, huge spider webs hanging from the trees, and no-see-ums that sting.

The ebook aimed at preteens and teens teaches the biblical path to salvation, plus the importance of obedience and prayer.

Lost in the Woods: A Bible Camp Mystery is the first in a series of Bible Camp Mysteries featuring Chet Harrigan and his crew from The Boy's Den. Others in the series includes Alone in the Woods, Bible Camp Mystery #2, and Disaster on the River, Bible Camp Mystery #3.

    About the Author

    Chapter 1: Summer Plans

Thirteen-year-old Zack often played with lizards and tadpoles in his large yard bordering a small nature preserve in Central Florida. Occasionally, he got a peak at one or more raccoons from the raccoon family that made its home in a large burrow behind their home.

Although they occasionally roasted marshmallows in a firepit in their screenroom, Zack’s family had never really gone camping. He wanted to go really badly, but his dad never seemed to have the time. Maybe next summer, he’d say. Then in the summertime, he’d say there were too many mosquitoes, and maybe they should go in the fall. There was always a reason, or – more likely – an excuse.

So Zack had pretty much given up hope of going camping with his family. He started praying his church’s youth group, The Boy’s Den, would be up for the adventure. He’d prayed about it and even asked his youth pastor, Chet Harrigan, if he would take the boys.

Pastor Chet, a 29-year-old former New York gang leader, was pretty fearless as leaders go, but he was caught a little off guard by Zack’s request. You what? You want to camp in the Central Florida backwoods? Whatever for? Pastor Chet asked.

Zack surmised that, since he was raised on the New York City streets, Pastor Chet just didn’t place the same value on nature.

Why not? Zack persisted. God made all that precious wildlife. Don’t you think we should experience it?

I’ll think about, Pastor Chet promised.

That was about four months ago. Consequently, Zack had just about given up on Pastor Chet too. He suspected something was up though, when Pastor Chet began hinting to the boys about some major event he was planning for the Living Water Community Church group.

Last week he’d urged the boys to be sure to attend tonight’s meeting. Zack was excited, but he wasn’t sure if he should dare to hope God was answering his prayer.

It’s been in the works for about three months now, but I’m planning our first, ever, Bible Camp, announced Pastor Chet. He grinned as he paused and gazed over the entire crowd, finally settling his eyes on Zack.

Zack grinned widely at Pastor Chet, then turned around to talk to his 13-year-old friend, Jeff, who was seated behind him.

    Wanna go? Zack asked.

    It sounds great! Jeff exclaimed.

Zack turned toward Pastor Chet to hear what else he had to say, but the other boys apparently were as excited as Zack. Everyone was talking, so much so that Pastor Chet had to wait for their attention. He smiled as he watched them, apparently amused and happy.

When the boys grew quiet, Zack listened eagerly as Pastor Chet continued sharing the plan.

We’re going to go deep in the woods far away from everything, pitch our tents and spend some time hiking and canoeing, Pastor Chet said. If you’d like to go, sign up before you leave today and we’ll give you all the information.

Oh, boy, do I! exclaimed Zack, swirling around
