    Bibliography

    Introduction - What Is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a relatively common condition in which patients suffer from pain and discomfort in many areas of the body along with symptoms of chronic fatigue, loss of memory and mood problems. It is believed to be related to an amplification of nerve signals in the brain so that pain is perceived more exquisitely.

Fibromyalgia, as mentioned, is extremely common, affecting more than 10 million people in the US. It is not a disease isolated to the US, however, and about 3-6 percent of the population worldwide suffers from the disease. Interestingly, about 75 percent to 90 percent of the cases happen in women, although children and men in all types of ethnic groups can be affected by the disease. The disorder, while not strictly hereditary, can be seen in siblings or in parents and children.

Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20 through 50 years of age although the incidence of the disease continues to rise so that up to 8 percent of people by the age of 80 already have the disease.

Those who have fibromyalgia can get it out of the blue; however, many seem to develop the disease after an infection, a significant psychological stressor or some type of physical trauma to the body. In those who get it spontaneously, it tends to come on gradually, with symptoms accumulating over time and no obvious triggering event.

Symptoms and diseases that seem to be related to having fibromyalgia include having tension headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, temporomandibular joint syndrome, and anxiety disorders. Those with fibromyalgia also seem to have chronic back or neck pain, ongoing chronic fatigue syndrome, and hypothyroidism (a thyroid gland which is underactive). Patients who once had Lyme disease are at risk for later fibromyalgia symptoms. People with fibromyalgia tend not to sleep very well or have recognized separate sleep disorders.

At one time, fibromyalgia was considered strictly a psychiatric condition because it affected women primarily who often had some sort of psychiatric condition. It is now felt to be due to changes in the pain receptors in the brain.

The underlying cause of fibromyalgia has not been fully understood but in Chapter 2, you’ll read about the latest theories on the causes of fibromyalgia. How exactly are the brain receptors changed and what is the triggering event for these changes? This will all be explored in Chapter 3.

Fibromyalgia cannot be cured but there are medications that can control the various symptoms. In subsequent chapters you will hear of the traditional treatments for fibromyalgia as well as the natural therapies and the use of meditation and exercise to control the disorder. The various relaxation therapies and exercise such as yoga and Pilates have been found to reduce the incidence of symptoms. Reducing stress has a great deal, too, with minimizing the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a unique syndrome affecting women (or men, in a few cases) in many areas of their lives. It is a complex pain condition that has physical effects on the person, emotional effects related to having chronic pain, and social effects. Patients with fibromyalgia tend to be socially isolated because others do not understand their pain and fatigue and because their symptoms tend to limit the number of social events they go to because of pain, discomfort, or fatigue. They seem to have a misunderstood disease and it affects them mentally, emotionally and socially.

Other names for fibromyalgia include fibromyalgia syndrome, fibrositis, and fibromyositis because the pain tends to affect the muscles and ligaments surrounding the joints rather than the specific joints themselves. The pain tends to last for years and
