About this ebook
Valerie and Samantha are disappointed that their schedules were not allowing them to spend a week together this summer like they have done every year since they were young. Their parents are able to plan a weekend camping trip towards the end of summer.
The girls are happy for the visit, but sad to think they can’t go through the mirror this year on another adventure. They discover the magic is not only within the mirror, but within themselves when they are together.
Merlin the magician makes a timely appearance to take them on their quest to help Arthur find his true identity and his place in Camelot.

About the Author
Chapter 1
Although Valerie’s summer had been extremely busy with summer camp, county fairs, Minnesota theme parks, the Renaissance Festival, and a canoe trip with daddy, she still missed what was her favorite part of summer—Samantha’s visit. This year while things were crazy for Val, that was also true of her best friend. Sam had her share of concerts, fairs, family visits, and dance competitions.
The summer was almost over. Valerie and Samantha were not happy about the fact they weren’t able to hook up yet. Their parents understood that they wanted to see each other, but didn’t quite understand why their daughters were so overly anxious for their visit this year. Although both of them were close with their parents, it was always understood they would never utter a peep about their adventures through the magic mirror. Amazingly enough, neither one let it slip.
The beautiful mirror rescued from the one-hundred-year-old barn on Valerie’s farm in Southern Minnesota, now hung in the living room. Valerie checked it often throughout the year, but it had revealed nothing to her. The magic it held was truly something the girls shared only when they were together.
This vacuums, Val.
Vacuums, Sam?
My mom doesn’t like it when I say sucks. It’s a compromise.
I should have gotten that.
What are we going to do?
Nothing we can do, I guess. I keep checking the mirror, but it’s not going to do anything if you aren’t here with me.
I guess so. You know I liked seeing you before our adventures started, too.
Val laughed. I know. Me, too, but it sure has been awesome.
Is that Samantha on the phone?
Val’s mom interrupted.
Hang on for a second, Sam. Yeah.
Let me talk to her mom.
My mom wants to talk to your mom. Maybe they finally have a date for when we can get together.
I hope so. I’ll go get her.
As their moms talked, the two best friends anxiously waited for the results of the conversation.
We’re going to meet somewhere in the middle and go camping,
Val’s mom told her after she hung up.
Oh, I guess that sounds like fun,
said Valerie, with a little disappointment in her voice.
What’s the matter, Larrie? You love camping.
I know. I’m fine. It sounds fun. Really.
Her tone could not have been any plainer.
Samantha can’t be away for a whole week with her competitions. It just isn’t working out this year. We’re lucky we both finally have the same weekend free.
No, really, it sounds like fun. I’m glad to get to see her at all.
Valerie walked back to her room after forcing a smile.
She did enjoy camping and was glad she was finally going to see Samantha, but it also meant no trip to their fairy tale land this summer. Val curled up in her window seat and called Sam back.
There is no way I can come up with a story good enough to convince my parents that we need to take the mirror along and squeeze it into the camper with us, Sam.
This vacuums, Val.
Like a shop vac.
Shop vac?
My dad has one out in his workshop. It’s huge, loud, and sucks up sawdust and big chunks of wood.
Then this definitely shop vacs, Val.
After talking for a while, the girls agreed a normal time together was better than not being together at all. They became more excited as they listed off activities the campground would offer. Valerie’s parents had a huge camper and Samantha’s had a boat.
Boating will be fun,
Val said.
Tubing behind it is even better,
Sam added.
We could roam around the trails.
Or bike.
We could fish.
Ew, Val. Pass.
Valerie laughed.
Finally, it sounded like a ton of fun after all. There was only one more week to wait; then they’d be together at the lake. Thank goodness they got it figured out.
Valerie and Samantha had been best friends since before they could talk. Their mothers met at a playgroup and had hit it off immediately. They often swapped babysitting time so they could do errands without dragging the kids around. Valerie taught Samantha how to climb on things she shouldn’t, and taught Sam’s mother that she could hold her breath longer than she ever imagined possible while changing a diaper.
Samantha moved a few hours away, but their families still remained close and got together as often as possible. Valerie was now twelve and Samantha was eleven. Even though they were best friends, sometimes they were as different as night and day. They shared very little of the same interests. Valerie loved to read, and Samantha loved her dance class. Valerie loved science projects while Samantha loved makeup. However, one thing they shared was a kindly fairy godmother, named Odette, who seemed to know just when to show up and take them for their next adventure.
Chapter 2
The two families met up right before seven on Friday night. Their parents split the difference on the drive so they each had a little more than two hours to go to get to the campground. They chose one with big sites, bike trails, and a huge lake. Val’s dad was unhooking the camper when Samantha’s parents pulled up. She barely let the truck come to a stop before flying out of it. After they shared a strong hug, Val waved a quick hello to Samantha’s little brother, Josh, then grabbed Sam’s hand and ran for the lake.
Stay close to shore until one of us can get down there, you two,
Val’s mom called after them.
We will,
they both answered and continued down the path. More often than not, they replied the same thing at the same time and finished each other’s sentences.
After reaching the water, they went calf-deep and kicked around in it for a bit.
This won’t be so bad, Val. No princes or trolls, but we’ll have fun just the same.
I think so too, Sam. I’m sure it wasn’t going to last forever, anyway. We might as well get used to it and try to forget about going again.
It was sure fun while it lasted, though.
Yeah…Hey! Race you to the pier!
They took off running, laughing the whole way. When they were younger, it was a race to get to everything. Who could get to the escalator at the mall, or the real race, seeing who could
