About this ebook

Nasira Nassif is a vampire business magnate, living in New York City with her temperamental werewolf girlfriend, Annie Goldstein. All is not well in the city's supernatural world: someone is kidnapping paranormal women, dressing them in fine clothes, and leaving them on the side of the road with a very important part missing-- their hearts. The police don't care much, and neither does Nasira-- until Annie is the one missing.

Joined by Annie's veteran older brother, Nasira scours the city for her beloved, while Annie tries to keep the weird smiling guy from stabbing her to death in his basement.

The story is about a murderer targeting supernatural beings - werewolves, vampires. The story starts with setting the stage by describing city life from a paranormal perspective. The first third of the book is story and character building. But then vampire Nasira comes home to find Annie (werewolf) captured by the murderer, and she is determined to find Annie and stop the murderer. Annie's brother Asher arrives in town to help with the hunt and the chase ensues. There are some interesting twists towards the end that I totally did not see coming. It is a fast read - I enjoyed it and will check out any additional reads by Morgan.

★★★★ Black Heart by Morgan DreissI was given this R2R through LibraryThing in exchange for my honest review. This is the story of paras in New York City. They have been known to the public for quite some time, however most still don't accept them. Nasira is a wealthy business owner. She is well educated and very well put together. She is also a vampire. Her girlfriend is Annie. Annie is the complete opposite. She's a mess. She owns a tattoo business. She also sells meth and weed. Her consist weed smoking and drinking cause her to be very short tempered. Not to mention she is a werewolf. Nasira has been on edge with a serial killer in town, picking off female vamps. But when the killer discards a werewolf body, it gets even worse. I liked this story. It was an interesting take on a PNR. The story was well written, and all the loose ends were tied up. I know what happened and what is going to happen, and am not left wondering. It is about time a book is ended properly. Thank you to the author for allowing me to come along on the rescue mission.

Chapter One

I love those who can smile in trouble, who can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but they whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves their conduct, will pursue their principles unto death. Leonardo da Vinci

There were a few things that would get you stared at on the subway, even in New York City, self-proclaimed homeland for the weird and strange. Talking on the phone in Arabic would be one of them.

She was taking the 4 line from Wall Street, so she was dressed in her usual business attire of a black pantsuit and smart heels. But, wearing a hijab in a post-9/11 world often aroused suspicion in even the most liberal of hearts, and she could tell that the stock broker holding onto the same pole as her wasn’t the owner of one. If only he knew she was talking to her poor old mother, and not the leader of a terrorist sect, he... Well, to be entirely fair, he probably wouldn’t change his mind at all.

Mama, she said, examining the man through thick dark sunglasses, I’m being stared at again.

It’s because you’re so beautiful, Nasira. She could barely hear her mother over the loud music on her side, and the roar of the train on her own. From the genre, she could tell her mother was in Kabul, or perhaps Kandahar, taking a taxi to whatever traders she was traveling to meet. The Nassif family ran a business specializing in the export of Middle Eastern goods. When her father was alive, he ran the company himself; when he died, she took over the executive branch in New York, and her mother ran things on the ground. Men always stare at you.

Yes, but they usually stare as if they’re trying to restrain themselves, she said wryly, and not as if they’re trying to mentally call the authorities.

Well, isn’t that to be expected? I tell you all the time, America is not the place to live. You’d be much happier back home.

Of course, happily married back in Mashhad, raising kids and ordering servants around while I wait for my husband to come home. She sighed dramatically, which apparently offended the man, who glared with even more intensity. On a somewhat related note, Annie sends her love.

I don’t care what that mutt sends, love or otherwise. The sniff in her voice was audible. Unless she’s sending you back to me.

Mama, I’m nearly an entire two centuries old. I’m rather sure I can make my own decisions by now.

No, the last I checked, you were a little chit of a thing, clutching to my skirts as we visited the World Fair. Far too young to be making decisions of the heart. Those are best left to your elders.

Papa liked her. As if the old bastard had heard her all the way from the heavens themselves, the train slowed to a halt at her stop. I’ll talk to you later, Mama. Good luck with whatever you’re doing.

And good luck with whatever plans you have tonight.

I won’t need luck. She snapped the phone shut. The man was still looking at her, and got off at the same stop. He was nearly close enough for him to touch her.

She flashed him a fanged grin and pushed her sunglasses down far enough for him to see her red irises. Take a picture, love, it’ll last longer. She disappeared into the crowd before he could get a word in edgewise. It had always been one of her talents.

At around the time WWII dragged to a close, the world collectively realized that perhaps there was a greater threat out there than Nazis and Communists and Communist Nazis: Supernatural beings. Most laughed it off at first, wrote it off as a few crackpots who’d been cracked just a few times too many-- until the leaders of this underground community began to show themselves in the daylight, and suddenly all the van Helsings of the world were proven right. Vampires walked among us-- as did werewolves, fairies, elves, dwarves, pixies, witches, ghosts, djinn, and all other manner of creatures. The creatures of legend, they were all true!

Well, except the Loch Ness Monster,
