Chapter I
The hostess wore a blue silk dress imprinted with colorful flora. Shiny black ringlets of hair hung loosely over one shoulder and rested against her breast.
With poise, the attractive woman stepped forward and waited for the chatter in the audience to cease.
"Welcome to this evening’s lecture. I’m Royanna Anton, a member of the
East Longmeadow Astronomy Society, the sponsor of this evening’s event. Our
guest speaker tonight is Dr. Stephen Drago, Professor of English at Central Community College. Dr. Drago has a Ph.D. in English literature and has been published in magazines and periodicals. He is also an independent researcher of UFOs and ETIs, two topics about which there has been much coverage in the media lately. Dr. Drago’s fascinating talk for this evening is Encounters with Extraterrestrials: Fact or Fiction?"
Royanna walked from the podium to the front row and stood for a moment glancing over her shoulder before sitting and crossing one shapely leg over the other. She smiled when she noticed the guest speaker was looking at her closely.
Stephen thanked the hostess for her introduction and then turned his attention to the audience. "In this vast universe, our tiny planet Earth is one of an infinite number of worlds, a planet, however, with unique assets–a perfect distance from the sun, an abundance of water, a richness of soil, and an equitable temperature-balancing system suitable for the maintenance and development of multiple life forms.
"Many believe visitors referred to as ETIs or extraterrestrial intelligences have journeyed to this oasis, this paradise in space called Earth. Writers of ETI literature claim that since earliest times humans have recorded the presence of aliens on our planet. This evidence, they contend, can be found in cave paintings, the tablets of ancient Sumer, the sacred writings of India and Egypt, artifacts of early civilizations, and the myths and legends of the world.
"Since I cannot do justice to the extensive cases of alien encounters, I will focus my lecture on those recorded in the United States following the highly publicized Thomas Mantell case.
"On January 7, 1948, a tragic incident occurred near Godman Air Force Base in Kentucky, an accident which caused many Americans to question whether or not extraterrestrials existed and whether or not they posed a threat to our national security. Across the nation, newspapers reported that USAF Captain Mantell’s plane crashed after being fired upon by a huge metallic alien craft. The U.S. government released a statement that Captain Mantell lost consciousness flying his plane too high while pursuing either the planet Venus or a skyhook balloon which he had mistaken for a space vehicle. Whatever the cause of Captain Thomas Mantell’s death, the incident roused the public to the possibility of ETIs visiting our planet on a regular basis and introduced what became known as The Modern Era of Alien Encounters.
Encounters reported after the Mantell tragedy were primarily with Nordics. Attractive aliens with blond hair and blue eyes contacted chosen earthlings to spread their messages of peace and good will. These benign humanoids warned of the misuse of nuclear weapons and the possible destruction of the Earth and other planets in our universe. The female ETIs encountered at this time were especially intriguing, wearing outfits of translucent material and slinky veil-like robes. Recorded encounter cases relate how these attractive female humanoids with shoulder-length hair and dark enchanting eyes often conversed at length with humans on sexual matters and other social customs.
As a few chuckles passed through the audience, Stephen glanced at Royanna, wondering what disparaging thoughts were passing through her mind about visitors from outer space and their prosaic antics.
"In the late 50s and into the 60s and 70s, the media reported encounters in which aliens seduced or raped humans. Either the former benign Nordics of the earlier contactee period had changed their modus operandi or a more aggressive species of extraterrestrials had arrived.
Stephen held up a newspaper. He pointed to its centerfold illustrating a humanoid ETI in a gray jumpsuit standing next to a man and woman. The alien is peering through a camera-like device while the couple are looking at a sketch of a UFO.
"This intriguing case is one of the most talked about on record. In September l961, aliens abducted Barney and Betty Hill as the couple drove through the White Mountains of New Hampshire on their return trip from Canada.
"Based on their unusual experience, John Fuller wrote an account of how twelve small humanoids with elongated chins and waxy gray skin kidnapped and submitted the frightened couple to a variety of physical tests. When they finished their curious examination, the meticulous aliens released the bewildered couple, telling them they would recall nothing of their experience aboard the spaceship.
"The Barney and Betty Hill case became the prototype for future abduction tales: aliens kidnapped humans, examined them like lab animals, and then released them. Following this well-publicized case, numerous accounts described aliens similar in appearance to the Hills’ abductors.
"In the 80s and 90s, gray dwarf-sized ETIs dominated the abduction scene, possibly a result of the wide influence of movies dealing with stereotyped aliens. Movies such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind immortalized the image of a three to four-feet hairless gray-skinned alien with an egg-sized head with large black eyes and no noticeable mouth or nose. These Greys–as they were called–crudely examined females abductees, often extracting
