~Chapter One~
I want to know…
Tabbruis awoke as the sun rose on New York Harbor. In his arms, he felt her… his love, Charmeine. The warmth she radiated to him was making his body feel electrified. As he opened his heavy hooded eyes, Tabbruis saw the face of an Angel with beautiful honey blonde hair framing it.
He had to make sure Charmeine and Shane were safe, so Tabbruis decided to call Dmitri and ask for help. He did not want to leave her. Nevertheless, he gently got out of the bed. He put on a robe, went into the living room and made a rather lengthy phone call to Dmitri.
After his phone call, Tabbruis checked on Charmeine and was relieved she was still asleep. He called room service for breakfast to be sent up. As Tabbruis was putting the phone down, he heard the Master Suite bedroom door open.
He saw Charmeine slowly walk into the living room as she tied her robe. Her blonde hair was in big tossed curls all around her face and shoulders. She smiled at him, and his heart leapt when he saw it. Quickly, he ran to pick her up into his arms. With a sexy curl of his lips, he softly growled, I wanted to surprise you with a breakfast in bed.
She dug her head in his neck and whispered softly in his ear, Well, don’t we have to be in bed to do that?
Tabbruis could feel her breath on his skin, and he was flushed with desire. He walked into the bedroom with her in his arms. Gently, he laid Charmeine down on the bed and rested beside her. He kissed her and relished the feeling of Charmeine’s soft lips on his. He began to run his fingers through her soft, long hair. Before he knew it, there was a knock on the door. He whispered, That cannot be breakfast already…
I hope so. I’m starved Tabbruis.
He raised his eyebrows, smiled and said, I will be right back.
She went into the bathroom and started brushing her hair.
Tabbruis went to the door and as he opened it up, Shane boomed his way into the room yelling, I want to know what the hell is going on here Tab!
Charmeine ran into the room and could see immediately Shane was very upset.
He shouted, That goes for you too Char! What the Hell is going on?
Charmeine and Tabbruis stood together with his arm around her.
Shane, I am with Tab now,
she answered.
Tabbruis added, And Charleen is my life now. I will never hurt her, and I will keep her safe always.
I know what you saw here last night was confusing Shane,
she said softly. Please sit down, and we will explain everything. Will you please do that much for me?
Shane looked into her big brown eyes and relaxed. He replied, Yeah, Char… I’ll listen, but you have to listen to me too.
This threw up a signal to Charmeine and Tabbruis that all was not right.
Tabbruis said as he was leading them to the living room area, Let us all have a seat. I have ordered breakfast and it soon shall be here.
As if on cue, there was a rap at the door, and Tabbruis opened it.
The waiter asked where they would like to eat.
Charmeine asked, Can we eat on the dining room table overlooking harbor?
Tabbruis nodded with smile.
The waiter pulled the cart to the table and asked, Would you like me to serve, sir?
Tabbruis shook his head, and kindly answered, That will be all, thank you,
and tipped the waiter. He smiled and left.
Everyone went to the table and was seated.
Tabbruis got out some coffee cups for Shane and Charmeine.
Charmeine got up and said, Please sit, I know how Shane likes his coffee.
She smiled at the both of them.
Tabbruis sat in the chair.
She handed Shane his coffee. Then she began to sip her cup. Charmeine rubbed her head because convincing Shane was going to be a tough job.
Tabbruis looked into Shane’s eyes and said, First I need to explain that I am an orphan too. I woke up on a rock in the desert many centuries ago with only the knowledge of my name. I did not know where I was from or how I got there. Charleen understood because that is exactly how it happened to her but she cannot remember anything past 1997, except for a dream.
Tabbruis and Charmeine smiled at each other.
Shane’s piercing blue eyes were suspicious and looked over to Charmeine then once he saw her eyes, he acquiesced with a nod.
Tabbruis took a breath and said, When I woke up, I learned I was not a human. I needed blood to live on.
Shane took a quick breath of disgust.
Charmeine looked him in the eye and said, He’s telling the truth Shane. I told you that part last night. However, you said you wanted to know what was going on. Now, you can either listen or leave.
Shane sighed and drank almost all of his coffee and said, Well, Char said something like that last night, but I can’t do this without more coffee. Go on Tab.
He got up, poured himself another cup of coffee and sat down.
Tabbruis said, Just like your body runs on food, I run on blood. For a long time I hunted humans to survive because I thought that was my destiny. However, I stopped because I could not inflict harm anymore. I made a conscious choice to only drink animal blood and drink human blood if it was donated.
Shane nodded his head and asked, So that is why Char had a blood pack holding it to your face last night?
Charmeine blushed and looked down as she was remembering the sensual experience of Tabbruis pulling on her blood.
Tabbruis answered, Yes, that is why Shane.
He looked at her and realized last night she had not offered her blood until there was no other option to do so. He felt ashamed, but Tabbruis set aside his feelings of embarrassment and concentrated on talking to Shane. He continued, She was trying to revive me, and I had sustained such a loss of blood…
Shane interrupted him and said, Hey Tab, I know. I’m the one who cleaned up the Charger last night until 2:00 in the morning. I know you lost a lot of blood.
Charmeine looked at him with a gaze conveying, ‘Watch it Shane.’
He sighed and said, But that doesn’t explain that creep and what happened to get you in that shape. Also, how do you heal so fast?
Shane, do you remember after the concert I told you electricity came out of my hands? How I shocked the guy so we could get away?
Yeah, I think that was the head injury talking Char,
he answered with a chuckle.
Charmeine looked at him seriously and sternly blurted out, Shane, I never lie! Believe it or not, Tab is a Blood-Hunter! And I am… a…a…Light-Bearer!
Shane just sat in his chair with a vacant look on his face.
She continued, I can use my power against Blood-Hunters.
She grabbed Tabbruis’ hand and with a hard swallow, she yelled, See!
As if she commanded it, white light raced over their hands.
Shane was startled and said, What the…
he stood up and backed away.
Sit now Shane, I’m not done talking to you!
she yelled.
Then as ordered, he slumped back into his chair.
She explained, Our races are sworn enemies of each other, but Tab and I have a special relationship. We are not enemies. We are connected by love.
Tabbruis looked at her with a look of surprise.
Charmeine hung her head thinking maybe she shouldn’t have said it, but it was how she felt. She turned to Tabbruis looking in his eyes and said, Yes… I said love.
Smiling wide Tabbruis lovingly took Charmeine’s hand and enfolded it with his other hand and squeezed it. White sparks were encircling their hands.
Tabbruis looked at Shane and his heart became heavy with what he was about to say. He said, It is true, my race is called Blood-Hunters or Elders. We track down and kill Light-Bearers because they are the only threat we have on Earth.
Shane’s mouth hung open in disbelief.
Furthermore Shane, we Elders have an Elder Council. They monitor us and police the Blood-Hunters to make sure they do not cross the line with the humans. The night of the concert, a Blood-Hunter discovered Charleen. He was going to take her to the Elder Council, so she could be executed.
Charmeine realized what danger she had been in. Her body shuttered thinking about it.
Tabbruis hung his head in disgust and said, I have no words to tell you how this angers me. To be with her is to be condemned by my race, the Blood-Hunters.
Then Tabbruis looked at Charmeine and said, But it seems little price to pay to love her.
She was welling in tears.
Tabbruis grabbed her sparking hand and cupped it close to his heart.
Shane looked at them and said, Well, I knew you two were crazy for each other, but I had no idea… I guess I believe you Tab and Char; but it’s out there. Nevertheless, in all the years I have ever known Char, she has never lied to me. I am shocked. However, nothing else can explain your blood loss and the way you are healed today.
~Chapter Two~
Lost and Found
Shane looked down and said in a hesitant manner, The reason why I was so panicked when I came in here this morning was because of a dream I had last night.
Shane gave them a long pensive look. He swallowed the rest of his coffee, shook his head and asked if there was any juice.
Charmeine looked at the cart and pulled out a decanter of orange juice and poured a big glass. She handed it to Shane.
He drank a gulp like it was hard liquor.
Charmeine asked, What happened in your dream Shane?
She grasped Tabbruis’ hand, and he lovingly covered her sparking grasp with his other hand.
Shane got up looked out over the harbor. He could see the Statue of Liberty brightly lit up by the sun. He walked onto the patio and took a breath of fresh air which gently blew into the room.
Charmeine was getting concerned.
However, Tabbruis gave her look which conveyed, ‘Let Shane talk when he feels like it.’
Shane paced up and down the door way taking in breaths of fresh air. He came inside after a minute of walking and deep inhalations.
When he finally began to speak, Tabbruis and Charmeine tensed with anticipation.
He said, I was an orphan, but I never told Char what happened when I was a baby.
She became anxious, and her lips pressed together in a straight line.
However, Tabbruis soothed her with his touch.
Shane continued, I was found in a beach in Hauppauge, close to Holbrook. You know which one I’m talking about Char? We used to go down to the pier and go fishing?
He turned to look at her to get confirmation.
She nodded and smiled with
