Introduction
The percentage of all high school football players in the United States who go on to play professionally in the NFL is roughly 0.09%. From that statistic, only two kickers on average are selected in the draft each year. Getting to that point requires an incredible amount of hard work, dedication, and discipline!
I thought it was fitting to begin this outline by explaining to you how football has changed and shaped my life. The older I get, the more I understand how fortunate I was to have certain situations work out for me the way they did with kicking. I was blessed as an athlete, but most importantly with the ability to kick a football. It was what I did with that ability that set me apart from the rest. Kicking gave me the opportunity to attend one of the best public universities in the country as a student athlete, in which I owe to earning some of my most prestigious accolades, accomplishments, and life long lessons. My experiences as a student-athlete at the University of Wisconsin are something I will never forget. While performing at the highest level of competition, I was able to receive my Business Management degree in four years, before being drafted into the National Football League. After being the first of only two kickers selected in the 2008 draft in the 6th Round, I was later released during the season by the New Orleans Saints following our game against the San Diego Chargers in the NFL’s International game in London. I went on to sign a Futures Contract with the Minnesota Vikings in 2009. In 2010, I had a stint in the United Football League with the Hartford Colonials in Connecticut. During that time, I founded Taylor Mehlhaff Kicking LLC. From that, I have also begun a coaching career with stops at programs with prominent football tradition such as the University of Tennessee and the University of Pittsburgh.
Kicking has opened the door to a plethora of career opportunities and has not only taken me all over the country, but around the world. The contacts and relationships I have developed along the way are second to none. The opportunity to kick at various levels has also taught me to be a better person, in all walks of life. The dedication to training and the determination to succeed is now instilled within me and I will continue to live by those qualities and to be the best that I can be. The many successes and failures along the way with my athletics have taught me how to deal with adversity and always to be resilient in my endeavors. My kicking career has allowed me to do something that I have always
