CHAPTER 1

Out and About

As the three brothers moved through the bush, many thoughts and memories filled their minds. They could still vividly remember the crash of thunder and lightning flashes from the fierce storm which trapped them up the valley two years ago. This memory would stay with them forever.

However, today their thoughts were elsewhere as they were thinking more about the environment they were in. All around them were primaeval podocarps and kauri trees, providing the perfect setting for their imaginations to run wild. Knowing that these forest giants had their origins in a world that was dominated by dinosaurs caught their imagination, and their minds were soon in a parallel world that was both prehistoric and exciting. To realise that some individual trees could be so old that they would have witnessed hundreds of years of history, and to think that some of these ancient giants could have been around when moa walked the earth was mind-boggling. Oh, how they would have loved to have had a time-machine to travel back and see first hand a world with monstrous reptiles and primitive plants, so different and yet in some ways similar, to this current playground of theirs, the Waitai Valley.

Now, as often was the case, their tramp turned into a series of games where they would shape-shift into creatures of the past and scramble off the track and into the dense undergrowth. Concealing themselves behind a bole of a kauri or beneath a skirt of a ponga they leapt out and pounced on one another, crashing and falling onto the soft litter of the forest floor. This kind of physical encounter was what they loved, and having a forest park as a back yard was the perfect place and setting for many of their trips and adventures.

Coming across a patch of ferns, Roscoe suddenly threw himself at Simione, bringing him down with a leg attack that had his brother on his back. Responding instantly, Simi rolled to face his brother, who was crouched ready for the next move. Roscoe lunged forward and grasped on with a front headlock, trapping Simi again. Without any pause the two brothers grappled for dominance. Simi soon fought himself into a better position by pushing forward to duck under Roscoe's arm, then lifting and turning, allowing himself to circle in behind his lighter brother.

According to the rules, this meant he took the first point in this spontaneous tournament. Third brother, Dan-Dan, now made his move and joined in the foray. With his two brothers locked in an even tussle, he attacked them both from the side, knocking them over, following them to the ground in a scramble to stay on top. The bout continued to shift from a one-on-one contest to a free for all, with the three of them scrapping—totally disregarding all the rules of freestyle wrestling.

Using the skills they had learnt over the last four years, the boys continued to tussle until they were exhausted. They crashed down on their backs, taking time out to
