About this ebook
The Mediterranean diet for healthy living describes a diet that is good for your heart and good for keeping you young. Find out about the Greek island where people live to a healthy ripe old age and a scientific study from Spain which proves how healthy a Mediterranean diet can be. There are suggestions for how to get into Mediterranean living and there are also lots of tasty recipes to try.
To have a healthy heart you need to be on a Mediterranean diet. Doctors everywhere have been saying, for a long time now, that people should take up a Mediterranean style diet. There has been the notion, for many years, that this type of diet is really good for you, but there haven't been many scientific studies to back up the idea. This has all changed with the latest study based in Spain. There really is the evidence, so read about it and then change to a Mediterranean diet as given in this book.
In this book you can also read about the Greek island where most people live to a hundred or more and still manage to have full and active lives, including a good sex life well into old age! Read about the reasons why these people manage to live such healthy lives for so long. The alternative is an American standard diet, poor health and the last years of your life in a dull care home.
The Spanish scientific study proves that a Mediterranean diet actually can limit the risk of having a heart attack or a stroke. It also shows that the normal low fat diet, that you are asked to go on, does nothing to help your heart. It is a Myth. In fact you could be doing yourself more harm than good by depriving your body of the important fats that it really needs. All fats aren't bad. You really do need fat in your diet, but it has to be the right kind of fat.
There are details given of many Mediterranean diet recipes that you can cook at home to start off your new way of life. These recipes have illustrated instructions and are based on the food that Greeks, Spanish and other peoples from the Mediterranean regions normally eat. A lot of so called Mediterranean recipes in cook books and on the internet have been so Americanized that you still end up eating all of the bad parts of the standard American diet. You need to avoid these. Here you will find authentic recipes that follow the ideals of good Mediterranean food.
Study the Mediterranean meals that Greek islanders eat all of the time and then use the recipes given to make your own Mediterranean diet plan. Look at the Mediterranean diet food list so that you know which things to include into your meals. It also explains how to find good recipes or change existing recipes so that they can be a part of the Mediterranean diet.
Mediterranean food is healthy, tasty and easy to make. Don't think that it is all about Mediterranean salads. There are many other recipes that you can make in your Mediterranean kitchen. Most of all, you will come to see that it is not only about a diet: it is about changing to a Mediterranean lifestyle, which means regular relaxation, sleep and exercise. Once you are engaged in your new Mediterranean lifestyle you will also know that your heart is healthy too!
Ellen Vincent
Ellen Vincent was brought up in Ghana but now lives in the UK. She is interested in all things that are natural. Ellen has noticed that many of the cosmetics and treatments that are available in the West contain lots of artificial ingredients and are often based on oils and substances made from petro-chemicals. After comparing them with the kinds of things that she used in Ghana she has found that the petro-chemical based ones can cause irritations and bad reactions as well as not being as good as natural based products. She now extensively makes her own cosmetics and only uses the best natural ingredients that she can find.Back in the old country coconut oil use is widespread and is used in cooking as well as to make body creams. She uses virgin coconut oil to cook with and uses it as the base for many of her skin and hair creams and oils. Ellen now produces a range of natural cosmetics that she sells in her local area in the UK under the name of 'Natural Revelations'. She hopes that she will be able to introduce these to Ghana at some stage together with all of the books that she has written on natural healthy living.Dealing with the outside of your body is fine but, to make the most of the creams and oils that you apply, you need to make sure that the foods that you eat are also doing their job. She is a big fan of green smoothies and makes sure that she has these every day. She feels invigorated after drinking them. You should look out for Ellen's books on green smoothies which include a volume that just contains ideas for recipes. She has built up her vast collection of green smoothie recipes by experimentation and following good practice. In the UK she came across apple cider vinegar and has found that this too is very useful when it comes to treating your skin and keeping your body healthy. She was so amazed by the many uses that can be found for apple cider vinegar that she wrote a book all about it. This too will soon be available through Smashwords. If you want to find out about how using a range of natural ingredients can be so good for your body and health, then you really should read Ellen's books. These are available in both electronic formats and as paperbacks. She is hoping to produce a book specifically for the care of Black hair and skin and as a result you should watch out for this when it is actually published in the near future.

Introduction
Mediterranean diets are based on the food eaten by the coastal dwellers of countries such as Greece, Italy and Spain. The food that these people eat depends very much on the local environment. As a result olives and olive oil are very important as are fresh fish caught from the Mediterranean Sea. Add to this, whole foods such as local green vegetables, fruits, whole grain cereals and nuts then you have the essence of the diet that is eaten. Also included in this diet is the moderate consumption of alcohol, often in the form of red wine.
The rest of the world is interested in Mediterranean food because of the health benefits that the people, living in these regions, seem to get from eating it. The diet is just as important for the things that either aren't consumed or are eaten in only small amounts. As a result people in these regions tend to eat only small amounts of red meat, processed meat, dairy products and sweet foods.
The Mediterranean diet has never been as popular in news reporting as it is these days. Interest has steadily increased since it was reported to us in 2005 that a scientific study showed that people following a Mediterranean style diet tended to live longer. In recent times interest has greatly increased, especially since it was reported in October 2012 that the majority of people living on the Greek island of Ikaria lived to a very old age. In fact they are two and a half times more likely to live until they are ninety compared to American people. In addition to this longevity, the people of Ikaria are also more likely to have an active and useful old age. In contrast, in North Western countries such as the USA, old age is more associated with having health problems and having to be cared for in an old people's home. It is therefore no wonder that scientists and doctors are keen to work out what the secret to this long and active life involves. Scientific studies have continued to be produced and the latest one published in February 2013 showed that people on a Mediterranean diet were significantly less likely to suffer from heart attacks and strokes compared to people that are even on ordinary low fat diets.
The aim of this book is to consider the evidence from these studies and reports and then to detail how you can implement to best aspects of a Mediterranean diet for yourself.
