Pain.
I woke up hard, in a strange and shadowy place. My hair hurt, my freckles hurt, my bones hurt. The side of my face throbbed, it hurt where it touched the pillow.
My soul hurt.
I opened my eyes to a new world, not wanting to remember what the ordinary world had been before. Who I once had been.
Before the accident.
I sank back down, into nothingness again.

The next time I woke up, I understood I was in some kind of hospital. A silent, strange, eerie kind of place, where I seemed to be the only patient. I hurt too much to wonder about it, and instead I just took in the silence and waited until I was better enough to start asking questions.
Time went by…a day? A week? I’m still not sure. But I came to understand that I had a doctor, Dr. Messina, and that she would make sure I got better.
When the time came to tell me what had happened, Dr. Messina was kindness itself. She sat by my bedside, and together we watched the sun setting behind the rolling hills outside my window.
Do you remember the accident?
she asked.
My mother…
I whispered. And then I cried.
I didn’t want to remember. But I did.
I’d been in a car wreck. And my mother was dead.

I’m still rehabilitating. My grandmother sent me here, to this sanitarium place called the Delphic Center, nestled away in the Delphic hills of upstate New York. It’s beautiful, it’s the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen, but it’s a prison, really.
Because the Delphic Center is a place of nightmares.
Dr. Messina wants to help me, I can tell. She has large brown eyes, a gentle voice, and she has infinite patience. But I don’t want to talk about the accident, or about my mom. I don’t want to remember that it happened at all.
The physical damage is healed, pretty much. But the nightmares are getting worse.
Dr. Messina says that writing in a journal can help me more than talking out loud. So I’m giving it a try. It won’t bring my mother back, and honestly I’m too exhausted to say very much about anything at all. But it’s the oddest feeling. And it gets stronger every morning, when I wake up from my nightmares and open my eyes to the beauty of the Delphic Center.
I’ve got to bear witness.
There’s something about the accident that I don’t want to remember. I already remember too much – the impact, the shattering glass. But I’m haunted by what happened right before the crash. Even though I can’t remember anything about being in the car with my mom before the accident itself went down.
Until the secret comes into the light, I’m going to stay haunted. That ghost wants me to remember.
This place, the Delphic Center, is filled with ghosts.
