    About the Author

    Chapter 1: A Surprise Announcement

I, uh, guess you’re wondering why I’ve been asked to talk to you today, 14-year-old Zack began haltingly. I know you’ve all heard the stories about how I got lost in the woods at Bible Camp last year, and how my parents said I would never be allowed to go on another one.

He paused, looking at the faces of the boys at the Boy’s Den, his church’s youth ministry. Though many of them were his friends, he couldn’t help being kind of embarrassed about what had happened. I mean, he got lost at a Bible Camp, and they had to send a helicopter to find him!

Pastor Chet Holden, the 29-year-old youth leader at Central Florida’s Living Water Church, had told them he’d never take the boys into woods again. His parents, and many of the youth’s parents, said they’d never allow their boys to attend another Bible Camp.

Zack’s eyes rested on his friend Jeff, who gave him a big grin and a thumb’s up. Then Zack cleared his throat. God had other plans.

Woo-hoo!! erupted several guys in the audience.

Zack had seriously wondered if the group would even want to go again, even if they could. He really wanted to tell his friends before today, but Pastor Chet had made him promise to keep it a secret. He thought all the boys should find out at the same time. So, here he was and the word was finally out. As he saw his friends’ enthusiasm, he couldn’t help but burst into a big grin.

By this time, Pastor Chet had made his way to the front. Zack gladly passed him the microphone.

I know you’ve got a lot of questions, Pastor Chet interjected, interrupting the loud clamor. I want you to know there’s been a lot of prayer – a lot of soul searching. I’ve talked with the church leaders and some of the parents. We believe this is what God wants us to do.

Pastor handed the mic to Zack.

I am here to tell you I am GOING! I’m actually going!! Zack beamed. My parents have relented. It has to be God because I never thought they would change their minds. But I am going on the Bible Camp – as your Junior Safety Coordinator.

Wow. I can’t believe it! exclaimed 11-year-old Sammy, a veteran of last year’s trip.

Let me show you why, Zack continued, nodding to a volunteer at the back of the room. I’m ready for the overhead.

The volunteer turned on the projector, which showed a map of Camp Timucua, the youth camp they visited last year.

We’ve put together this map, Zack said. As you can see, from where the Youth Campsite is marked, our campground was actually very close to civilization.

See where the latrine is? In case you don’t know, that’s an outdoor trench we use as a bathroom. Anyway, I went to use the latrine and I headed north from there into the woods, eventually finding the trail toward the Crooked River, Zack explained. The road – and help – were a short distance away. To the south.

The remark drew a loud whistle.

Yeah. Help was actually pretty close by. I just went the wrong way, Zack acknowledged. Pretty embarrassing, right? Anyway, I’ve been asked to accompany the group as your Junior Safety Coordinator ... because I’ve learned what to do, even though I learned the hard way.

You’re not kidding, his friend Peter called out.

"I want you to know this wasn’t my idea. I wasn’t even sure I wanted to go camping again. I really wanted to go last year, but after all that happened, I figured my camping days were over. At least for awhile. But then I was asked to come again, Zack continued as the crowd became silent. I prayed and talked with my parents and they are letting me come."

    Now he had
