    She was rushing home, driving through a storm. The blacktop was normally very dark and now with the streetlights out, the road was even darker. Cold rain slanted across her headlight beams like silver tears. Wind swayed the tree branches and made ripples in the water on the road. The windshield wipers couldn't keep up with the downpour and she had to slow down.

    She was having trouble steering the old VW, with the wind and rain pushing the car from the side and the water on the road impairing traction. To her left was the Siuslaw River; it wasn’t unusual for it to overflow its banks, but she couldn’t see the river in the dark. And the Florence-Eugene Highway dipped and the water on the road seemed deeper, but she decided to take a chance, she had to drive only a few dozen yards and she'd be on higher ground.

    She stepped on the gas pedal and her VW lunged
