    Chapter 1

It is a nice, sunny, late summer day, and Jason was riding with his realtor out to a home that he had seen on the computer. It was a nice little two bedroom home, built in the mid 1800‘s and sitting on fifty acres. It sported a nice five acre pond and lots of wood surrounding the whole property. They drove for about ten minutes outside of town, and turned onto a long gravel driveway. They drove another five hundred feet, and pulled up to the side of the house. They stopped and took a look around the property from the car.

The realtor turned to Jason and asked,

I think that this is just the place that you are looking for, it has the seclusion you wanted, and there is a pond for all of your fishing.

I saw the pictures on the computer and, I don’t know, it just kind of called to me. Jason replied.

Well then, let’s go on inside and you can take a look around. See what you think and if it’s everything that you saw on the computer

    It looks good so far.

You still have to go and see the inside. The realtor told him.

Well let’s go look. Jason said as he and the realtor opened the door and went on inside.

What do you think so far? She asked.

I like the hardwood floors, and the fact that it does have two bedrooms. Jason answered as he walked around the house checking out all of the rooms.

    Well?

I think that it is everything that I thought it would be.

That’s good, so what do you think? Should we start the paperwork? She asked with a big smile on her face.

Yeah, let’s go ahead an put an offer in for it, I want this house. Jason said as they both walked out of the house and headed to the car.

Let’s go back to my office, you can sign the papers and I will get your offer submitted.

How long do you think it will be before we get an answer?

We should hear something within the next twenty four hours. The realtor replied.

    That would be great!

Jason and the realtor returned to the realty office and they got the paperwork signed and Jason headed back to his little apartment to await word from the realtor on his offer. The next morning while Jason was on his computer tending to his investments the phone rang. When he answered the phone, it was the realtor. They talked for a few minutes, then the realtor was able to speak to him about the offer that they had put on the house. Now excited about what response she had given, Jason could barely contain himself while he asked,

Well what did they say about my offer?

They got back with me about an hour ago, and they had accepted your offer.

That is great, when can we close on the deal? Jason asked while jumping out of his chair.

We can have an immediate closing if you would like, in fact if you want to come by the office this afternoon we can sign all of the papers. All you have to do is go by your bank and get the check and come by here and get your keys. The realtor explained.

That is great, I will go by the bank just after lunch and I can meet you there when ever you want to meet.

Alright, why don’t you come by around two and I will have everything ready.

That will be perfect, I will see you then. Jason said as he hung up the phone and prepared for the closing that afternoon.

Just after lunch Jason went to his local bank and picked up a check to pay for the house. He then headed over to the realtor’s office to sign all of the papers and get the keys to his new house in the country. He was very excited about getting the home and after he had signed all of the papers and received the keys to the home, he was in a big hurry to get back to the apartment and get his things together so that he could move in to the house. He quickly loaded the back of his pickup and headed out of town to his new get away in the country.

Jason had to make a conscious effort to keep around the speed limit as he drove down the road. He pulled off of the highway and onto his drive way, driving the down the five hundred yards to reach the house, he was looking out into all of the pastures and the woods that lined the road. Smiling widely, he was just taking it all in and getting it in his mind that this place was now his. He pulled up to the side of the house, and stopped just at the door and looked around, getting out of the truck, he took a deep breath and pulled the keys from his pockets and walked up and unlocked the door. Looking back over his shoulder, he turned and stepped into the house.

He walked in and took a look around and wondered where he was going to start. Not sure of what to do first, he went back out to the truck and carried the boxes in that he had brought with him. He began to put some things away in the kitchen and try to get some sort of organization, then he decided to take a break, now that it was beginning to get dark outside, and go out onto the back deck and drink a beer and just relax. He found it to be a nice night, not cool and not stifling hot. He grabbed a seat and looked out into the woods that were at the back of the house and enjoyed listening to all of the insects, and noticing how bright all of the stars were as compared to the night sky that he sees from his old place in town under the cover of the city lights.

Jason sat there on the deck, and after having a couple beers his attention was drawn from the night sky, down towards the woods in the direction of the pond that was on the property. He sat there quietly for a moment, then he could see what looked like a lit light bulb floating through the woods. He sat up in the chair and stared at the object for about twenty seconds, then as quickly as the light appeared it disappeared. There was no noise and he could not see anything else, just the light floating through the air.

Thinking that he was just seeing things because of the beer, and that maybe he just didn’t know the area that well yet as he had just moved in, he shrugged his shoulders and decided that he better go inside and stop drinking for the night. He went into the kitchen and started to make something to eat, as he was waiting for his food to get done in the microwave, he glanced out the kitchen window and thought that he saw someone run through his back yard.

He ran out the back door that lead to the deck, and as he went out the door he hit the switch to turn on the lights to the back, but as he ran out of the door he looked into the yard and he could not see anyone, and there was no sign that there was even anyone that had ran through there. He stood there for a moment looking around to see if he could find anyone out there that may just be pulling a prank on him. But after standing there looking around for a few minutes, he decides that maybe there was no one around, so he went back inside to eat, now that he had heard the bell from the microwave ring telling him that his dinner was ready. He was able to eat his dinner and retire to bed for the night with no further incidents.

The next morning, he awoke to the sunlight shining through the window. He made his way to the kitchen so that he could get a pot of coffee going to get his day started. He got his big coffee mug and thought that it would be nice to go and sit on the deck while he drank his coffee. He went out and sat at the table and began sipping from his cup, when he looked up and noticed that above him, was a window that lead to the attic area. He thought about it for a minute, then realized that there were no stairs in the house that lead up there, so now his curiosity was really peaked. Now he knew that he just had to get a ladder and get to that window and see what may be hiding up there in the attic. Having only finished about half of the cup of coffee, he went in and got dressed then headed back to his place in town to get another load of boxes of his belongings, and also to retrieve his ladder.

Once he drove back to his new house, he unloaded all of the boxes and laid them in the living room, then he went back outside and grabbed the ladder from the back of the truck. He quickly, ushered the ladder around to the back of the house to the deck and sat the ladder up to the window so that he could get access to the attic space. He climbed the ladder and made it to the window, there he could see that the window was held in place by the two hook and eyes. He popped the hooks up and laid the window to the side just inside the attic. Poking his head inside he could see all of the old insulation, many spider webs, plenty of mouse poop, and there in the middle of it all, he saw a couple of old trunks. He could tell by looking at them that they are old, and judging by the amount of dust on them, they have been sitting there for quite some time undisturbed.

He climbed through the window, barely able to squeeze himself through the opening. Coughing, as the dust clouded his throat, he crawled through the dirt and made it to the first trunk. He brushed his hands together as if he was going to be able to get off some of the dirt, then he slowly opened the lid. As the lid opened, he could barely see what was inside, then he pulled the trunk towards the window to get a better view. As the trunk came into the light, he could see that there was an old blanket. He pulled up the blanket to have a better look at it, but then his attention was moved down back to the inside of the trunk, where he could see a pile of old black and white pictures. Setting the blanket down to the side he picked up a handful of pictures, and began to file through them.

He looked at them, one after the other, and saw pictures of people that he did not recognize. Then he stopped when he got towards the end of the pile that he was holding, and he stared at it. He held it closer to his face, and it was as though he was looking at a picture of himself when he was a younger man. He put it down beside him, so that he could take it with him once he went through the rest of the trunk. He picked up another pile of pictures, and they were as the others, there were pictures of many people that he did not recognize. Then he found a picture of three women. He did not recognize the women in the picture, but he did find it curious that they were all standing around a bonfire down by a lake and that they were all naked. Then he put that one down by the other one that he was going to take with him. After going through the last of the pictures, at the bottom of the trunk he found a necklace. On the necklace was a six pointed star, and it looked like the star of David. He thought that it was unique so he placed it with the two pictures at his side.

Once he was done with that trunk, he went over and took a look through the other two trunks that were there in the attic. The other trunks had various articles of clothing, all of which were old but that to him had no real value. He closed up the trunks and grabbed the necklace and the two photos and headed back to the window to crawl out of that dirty attic.

Jason went back outside, and put the ladder at the back of the house and took his new found items inside to the table. He plumped his butt down in the chair and
