After successfully fulfilling my obligations of my first year as trainer for the girls’ basketball team I looked forward to the off season. I was approached by the gymnastics coach about switching over to be the trainer for them. I respectfully declined wanting to return to the women’s basketball team for at least one more season. Since the seasons were coincidental I had to choose between the two. I had grown close to the girls on the basketball team and I was reluctant to leave them. The gymnastics coach respected my decision and said she would check back before next season.
The biggest change that happened during the off season was the changing of the head coach. Last year the coach was low key and mild mannered. He left to take a big time job at a large university. The new coach was high strung and was expecting a lot out of the girls. She had sights on a big season and wanted to make sure everyone was on board with it.
Erika would again work as my assistant. We had a good synergy and seemed to know what the other would be thinking at any point in time.
As the season approached I had several meetings with the new coach. She was anxious to get the report from the team doctor. Our new center Monica was coming off of a torn ACL last season, her senior in high school. She had been heavily recruited after her junior year in high school. The interest from the big school waned after she was injured in the first game of her senior season. We were able to recruit her because of the risk the big programs saw in her after her injury.
She was a dominate center who would be an excellent replacement for Tammy who graduated last year. At 6’4" and 215 pounds Monica was a formidable center who could take the team to the next level. Marci who was a junior this year, had the talent to be a backup center but was not the dominant player Monica could be if she returned healthy.
In early August we received a report from the team doctor telling us that Monica had returned to 100% from her torn ACL. It appeared the programs calculated risk on her may pay off. The other question marks we had were how Elke recovered from the torn ligaments in her ankle, how Amy had recovered from her torn Achilles tendon and whether or not Jenny would have her knee problems continue this year.
As the girls showed up on campus in early to mid-August I met with each of them individually to see what if any problems we might be dealing with. The coach wanted to make sure I had a complete understanding of all the health issues we might need to deal with during the season.
The first one back was Amy who had her freshman campaign cut short last season when she tore her Achilles tendon. She said that she felt like she had fully recovered from her injury and surgery. I examined her ankle and other than the telltale scar from the surgery her ankle seemed like it had fully recovered from the injury.
Rochelle showed up for her senior season seemingly healthy as a horse. She was versatile and could play any position that might be asked of her. She was expected to be a leader of the team her senior season. The next girl to come see me was Gabriela, she was a freshman from Brazil that was setup to play guard. She had a history of left ankle sprains but the foot seemed completely healthy when she showed up. We discussed a support strategy for her and settled on taping it before each practice and game.
Elke showed up on campus in early August having spent the summer back home in Germany. I was a little disturbed that the ankle she had injured so badly last season still seemed to carry some swelling in it. Perhaps she should have had surgery to tighten up the ligaments before embarking on her senior season. While she declared the ankle fine for the upcoming season I reached an understanding that the ankle may not be recovered as well as we would like. Elke wasn’t inclined to tell us this, but none the less I divined it from my conversation with her. Apparently she also had an incident while she was out with some friends that resulted in a minor re-sprain of the ankle.
Dawn was our other freshman center. While not the dominating figure that Monica was at 6’2" 160 pounds, she looked more like a model than an intimidating force in the paint. None the less her athletic abilities allowed her to be a good backup to Monica and Marci.
When I met with Jenny I was encouraged by how good her knee seemed to be doing. She had recovered well from her microfracture surgery and her doctor had cleared her to return. We discussed her confidence in the knee and after all she had been through with it she seemed to want to continue to brace it at least until she felt more sure about it.
Jan was a returning junior at guard. She was having some back problems
Francie was a freshman forward. She reported that she had never had any serious injuries in her career and she hoped to keep that record up now that she was at this level.
Molly was back for her senior season. She seemed to be in very good condition and had no health issues to discuss.
Jessica was a freshman guard. She has had seven sprains of her left ankle so we discussed how she has historically supported it. We discussed taping but she explained that she had a brace she was happy with, she only had one sprain her senior
