Hi there! I appreciate you are taking a few minutes to get to know about me. I've enjoyed a fascinating journey of learning and experiences over the years. Since publishing my Smashwords books, I have moved on from writing about banking and personal finance. However, I have chosen to keep these works alive in the digital world. I have been writing since my college years and have so enjoyed the world of writing, books, and publishing since that time. During my corporate years in banking and personal finance, I liked sharing financial knowledge to empower consumers to make better money decisions. In addition to giving educational workshops, working with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago with MoneySmart Week, I wrote and published books in the personal finance genre, some of which are available here on Smashwords. I also thrived in my side-gig as a managing editor and publisher of several digital magazines, i.e., a literary magazine for women and then later a personal finance magazine. I was definitely a busy person during my corporate years! However, I consider myself lucky to follow new dreams in the latter part of my career. It was in 2014 that I said goodbye to the corporate world to follow my passion for writing, research, ghostwriting, publishing, and nature photography full-time. Below is my formal profile that I now have on LinkedIn. You can also visit my personal website at MelissaNewton.com to learn more about my work now as a ghostwriter and publisher, and access free downloadable ebooks on different topics in writing. Chapter 1

    Stranger on a Train

The sun had barely risen behind the cloud cover before men and women were moving into their fast-paced routine of the day. There was a chill in the air on that rainy March morning. Drops of water dribbled down the window blurring the faces of the waiting group on the train platform. In Illinois, Chicago commuters are a hardy bunch. Even as the Burlington Northern slowed, comfortable suburbanites prepare to zero in on their favorite seat for the thirty minute ride into the city.

The familiar click, click, click of the conductor punching rail tickets goes unnoticed. The snap of a folding newspaper, a quiet discussion between two passengers on some topic or another, all familiar as the schedule Chuck was reviewing in his calendar for the day. It was a typical work day for Chuck. But, it was a day that would change the rest of his life.

A man sat down on the seat next to Chuck. From the cut of his raincoat to the damp shine of his shoes, he recognized a fellow businessman. He had not recalled seeing the man before on the train, but that wasn’t unusual. Although he might see the same people day in and day out, it was a matter of chance as the express trains were always packed with passengers.

Being a man who enjoyed conversation, Chuck introduced himself and the pleasantries exchanged between men of business commenced. How long have you lived in Chicago? Do you think the Cubs can bring home a win this season? What is it that you do? While discussing his work, Chuck mentioned that he would like to teach some day. He really wanted to make a difference and help people. The problem was he didn’t know how to get started. The man made a suggestion that had Chuck immediately sitting taller in his seat. A management association existed in the Chicago area where business professionals taught classes in the evenings on subjects in business for employees of companies.

Chuck obtained the contact details from the man and thanked him for the information. He subsequently met with the management association, and it wasn’t long before he had his first teaching assignment.

He would teach for the next twenty-five years, a journey he would continue until the end of his life. Teaching encouraged Chuck to obtain a Ph.D. in business, which in turn opened the opportunity for him to teach at colleges and universities in the Chicago area. Chuck also served a term on the local school board in his community. During a downsizing at his company in the early 1980s, Chuck was prepared. He had already laid the foundation to become an entrepreneur. He established his own consulting company whereby he counseled presidents and executives of companies on business matters and continued to teach part-time.

Chuck’s life was enriched because of one chance encounter on a thirty minute train ride to the city. He decided on that rainy morning that he was going to make a change. He wanted his dream of teaching to become a reality. Chuck would live the life he imagined, ultimately creating a consulting company and teach - making a living in the kind of job he really loved. Why did this all come about? He was willing to make a change to improve his professional life.

    Chapter 2

    To Improve is to Change

Do you really like your job? Is how you make a living what you thought it would be or do you wish things were different?

Since you are reading this book, you may be thinking about making a change. Perhaps you don’t want to go through another year doing the same kind of work or job. You have imagined yourself in a different place than you are now. Would one of these situations describe your present circumstance?

Situation #1: I fell into my job and never really made a choice about what I wanted to do for a living.

Situation #2: I am one of the millions who got caught in the wave of unemployment during the Great Recession and can’t find a job.

Situation #3: I would like to transition to another career entirely.

Situation #4: I am ready to move up the corporate ladder but don’t seem to be making any progress.

No matter where you find yourself at this moment, you don’t have to stay in the same place. You CAN take control of your situation. To gain control and improve your work life experience to the level you have always wanted, you have to shift direction and chart a new course.

To improve is to change; to be perfect is to have changed often.1

    Winston Churchill

Howard Schultz has always navigated his professional life embracing the principle of change. As a consequence of change, he also welcomed growth. Indeed, when he planned a trip to Italy in 1983, he could not have known how change and growth would so profoundly influence his life and the lifestyle of millions in the years to come.

When Howard began working for the Starbucks Coffee, Tea, and Spice store in the early 1980s, he already had a great interest in the business. In fact, he would leave a lucrative job, accept a pay cut, become an equity investor, and relocate to Seattle, Washington where the Starbucks store was located.

During his 1983 trip to Italy, he noticed the ambience and community that the cafes offered. A light bulb blinked to life in Howard’s head. He had a vision of creating the café model in the United States. Unfortunately, his vision for growth and change was received with less than enthusiastic feedback from his employers. Howard was motivated to make change. He would have to go out on his own.

He parted ways with the Starbucks Coffee, Tea, and Spice store. He raised $3.8 million through a group of investors and launched Il Giornale in 1987. On the heels of this investment, the Starbucks Coffee, Tea, and Spice store was put up for sale. Howard jumped at the opportunity to purchase the company, raising $4 million in capital. Employing a strong executive team, within four years, Starbucks would grow from $4 million to $273 million. And, as they say, the rest is history. 2

Chuck and Howard provide an example of how change can be a positive choice. They became an active agent in shaping their future prospects. You can do the same. Are
