    The rural, two-lane highway was blanketed in snow. It only happened once - maybe twice - every so many years in southwest Missouri, but when a snow storm happened, it was usually a pretty good one.

    Even rarer was a snowfall on Christmas Eve.

    Visibility was below low. Even if anyone had been around, no one would have been able to see the powdery snow whirl in and of itself on the right side of Highway EE. Like a mini-tornado the snow swirled into a thick cloud, the narrow bottom of it never leaving the snow-covered ground.

    By the time the lights from the lone oncoming vehicle penetrated the snow blind, the mini-tornado was gone. In its place hobbled an old man with a white, chest long beard. He carried no bags, only gripped a wooden cane with both wrinkled hands. His feet sunk up to his ankles in the snow as he crunched slowly north.

    The dash board lever was set as far to the ‘warm’ side as it would go, but the air coming out of the vents wasn’t very warm. In fact, Jeff Killian’s feet were as cold as the snow outside his seventy-nine Mercury Grand Marquis.
