Lacey Weatherford

Lacey Weatherford was born in Ft. Meade Maryland while her father was serving in the military. She has been a life long resident of Arizona, spending most of her time growing up in the small rural town of Clay Springs. It was while she was attending the small country school in Clay Springs, that she read her first "big" book at the age of eight. It was a Nancy Drew novel and Lacey was instantly hooked. She read every book that she could find in the series and decided that she wanted to write stories too.Lacey spent a lot of time at the library from that time forward, even volunteering in her later teen years and early twenties. She would don a crazy clown outfit for the Friends of the Library fundraisers in an effort to help get the new town library built. When she and her husband moved away from the area, Lacey took the opportunity to take some creative writing classes at the local college to help further along her interests. Several years later, they were blessed with the opportunity to move back to Clay Springs with their family. The town had finally succeeded in building their library and Lacey had the opportunity to be President of the Friends of the Library for a very short time, before relocating.Lacey and her family still live in the White Mountains of Arizona, where she continues to write young adult novels that have a fantasy/fairytale or paranormal bent to them, as well as being sure to include a great romantic storyline

This series is a truly addicting one. I got the first book for free long ago, and then I subsequently bought every other book that followed because I couldn't get enough. Lacey's ability to weave a story and to create characters that are not only memorable, but enjoyable as well, is a true testament to her skill as an author. The storyline never stopped moving, and the action didn't stop, even up until the final page. Looking for critiques on the book, I can't even really find any, to be truthfully honest. I enjoyed the book from cover to cover, and this is the third time I have read it through! For anyone who is a fan of magical novels, and of characters who you never want to let go, then this is the book for you. I especially liked the way she addressed the darker aspect of magic--very interesting, and ingenious!

What a terrific feel-good romance! I loved the story of Portia and Vance. She finds out on her sixteenth birthday that she is a hereditary witch. She learns that her grandmother and father are in charge of a powerful coven that is protecting Vance Mangum from his evil father. Vance is the boy that she took one look at and fell in love with when she was 14. He stayed away from her until she was sixteen both to protect her and to keep his promise to the coven. But now they can be together. They have a great romance but danger is still lurking. Portia is almost run down by a car and an explosion in her school chemistry lab almost kills her. Vance is kidnapped by evil demons because of his power. Only the bond between them lets Portia find him.

The Trouble with Spells is the first book in the Of Witches and Warlocks series by Lacey Weatherford. The book centers around Portia, who discovers she is a witch on her 16th birthday. On the same day, she learns that Vance, the hottest guy in school, is a warlock who belongs to the same coven. The book begins with Vance's point of view. Any book that starts with a sexy, mysterious guy has a fighting chance with me. I felt that the best parts of the book included Vance. I really liked when Vance's past is revealed, bit by bit. I found myself skimming over a lot of the minute details of Portia's day-to-day life, always ready to get back to Vance. Which leads me to a teeny problem I had with the storyline. Shortly after connecting, things move fast for Vance and Portia. Very fast. Vance starts spending nights with Portia, in her room, in her bed. I had a hard time believing parents of a teenager would let her boyfriend sleep in her bed every night. Even if they are "bound" and decide to remain abstinate. But to the authors credit, Portia's mom does express concern with the situation and has "the talk" with Portia. Also, there were times when the narrative began to feel a little young for me. Now that I've gotten that out of my system, let me say what I did like about The Trouble with Spells. This was a very, very sweet love story. The chemistry between Portia and Vance is so hot. When Lacey Weatherford describes their passionate kisses, I swooned a bit myself. I did love the devotion they had for each other. The book also had great drama. When Vance's trouble past comes crashing into the present, the drama, danger and mystery is ramped up. I don't want to divulge spoilers, but the last few chapters had me gasping and gaping. In fact, the last few chapters of the book were so great that I can not wait to read book two in the series, The Demon Kiss. As of now, there are four books in the series. As long as they are all as good as The Trouble with Spells, you can count me in!

I liked how fun and clean the book was to read. Vance Mangum has been running from his father for years. His father is evil and was turning vance too. Vance mom found out and she got Marsha to take care of Vance and protect and keep him safe.Vance is a powerful warlock who's power started at 5years old. When he was 16 they moved again at the new school he instant he saw Portia Mullins he was tuned into her but found she was the one person that he promised to stay away from till she turned 16 and found out she was a witch too.Two years later Portia world changed when she found out her dad, grandma and Vance were witches too in the same coven and if she joined they would be 13 members.Portia also found out that Vance has watched over her for two years and he new she had a crush on him because he could hear her feelings and voice inside of him. Later Portia could hear and feel Vance's feelings inside her too.But than someone tried to kill Portia and they got closer together and had a binding spell between them that was stronger than any heard of they had a hard time being apart. It was a good story and look forward to reading more about them in the next book.

I just finished this book, literally just 2 minutes ago, and I was so excited I had to write this review immediately!! Oh. My. Gosh!! This book was SO good! It has everything you want in a YA book: romance, mystery, witches, warlocks and demons! (At least, that's everything I want in a YA book!!)The two main characters are Portia, the witch, and Vance, the yummy warlock, who is her soul-mate. Portia doesn't find out until her 16th birthday that she and her grandmother are witches, and her father is a warlock, very high up in their coven. Vance, who is on the run from his demon warlock father, first meets Portia when she is 14 and he is 16, and is instantly attracted to her, but he made her father a promise that he would not approach her until her 16th birthday. And true to his word, he waits until after her parents tell her, and then he goes to her. Yes, it was as romantic as it sounds!! Vance is tall, dark and handsome, and my new BBF (book boyfriend)!! These two together have more power between them than anybody has ever seen, so they know they are special together. What I really liked about this book is that they talk about how much they want to have sex, but they discuss how Vance made himself a promise that because he often has to pick up and go at a moment's notice (if word comes to him that his father has found out where he is and he has to run immediately), he will never leave a girl in the lurch after he has slept with her. Therefore, to keep his word, they can't have sex until after they are married, which they plan on doing when Portia turns 18. And believe me, it's not easy, because Vance is a delicious, romantic, thoughtful, sensitive little morsel!!The characters in the book are all very well fleshed out, even the supporting players. You feel like you know and care about all of them. The writing is superb. The story just flows from one scene to the next, without any confusion. The book grabs you from page one and doesn't let go, even after you finish it! Yes, there is one hell of a cliffhanger, and a major curve ball is thrown at you near the end of the book, but it is a good one! You don't see it coming and then it's there, and you're just turning pages (or in my case, clicking the next page button on my Kindle) as fast as you can to find out what happens next. I swear, I'm going to have to tape my thumb because it's worn out from clicking on my Kindle! I just couldn't put this book down, it was that good!In summary, in case you can't tell, I loved this book, and I am going to Amazon right now to buy the second book in the series, because I can't go to sleep until I find out what happens next!!

ts books like these that make me believe in soul mates. Portia and Vance are just perfect for each other. The concept of ‘love at first sight’ surrounds this couple. The swoon-worthy Vance and budding-witch Portia make the most adorable couple.Okay as a book reviewer, i am to be completely honest. Painstakingly honest, if required but bashing a book is not what i have set out to do. Being as this is the second book i have read revolving around witches, forming a unchangeable opinion would be too hostile. (Now i have feeling that you might be thinking that either i have conflicting feelings about this book or that i am seriously out to do some bashing. I’ll just clear it…i’m here to do neither.)The Trouble With Spells revolves around this couple, a newly-turned witch and an all-too powerful warlock. (You gotta love these settings) Anyway, Vance (the warlock, if you didn’t already guess) at first tries to battle his feelings for Portia (the witch) because he feels that he carries with him a danger, but Portia is not going to give up. This is isn’t how the story plays out though. Vance doesn’t play the all hard to get hero and Portia is no where the stalkerish-ever-so-persistent heroine. Just saying.Together Vance and Portia make this adorable couple and you find yourself thinking back to Edward and Bella (even though i have no intentions of going there because comparing books to other books is not what i set out to do). The extreme feelings of love that both these characters have for each other is just to breathtaking. Portia is just to cute when the first spell that she creates is for the protection of Vance. Check the spell out below:Oh moon, Tonight i call on theeTo help me set a spirit freeGive thy protection on this nightEver surround him with the lightLet no evil near him getMay only goodness now be metThis book contains some hot make-out scenes and i just loved reading them. I had a blast reading it and for me it was no-putting-downer (if you can understand that) Plus the ending was heart breaking and breathtaking. “psst” You’ll just have to read to find out.

I love the idea and most of the storyline but I am having trouble with a few areas of the book. First Portia takes all these life-breaking news with almost a shrug of her shoulders. This is the girl that swoons day and night over Vance, shouldn't she be a bit more upset on becoming a witch! Overall I like the book and am currently in the middle of the next installment but I would like a bit more dramatic AHHH's and a bit less dramatic awww's in the story if you know what I mean. 3.5 to 4 out of 5 stars, would recommend with caution.

Gushing is so not enough for this book! I absolutely LOVED it! Hands down, it was a fabulous read. Vance and Portia completely blew me away. They were spellbinding in their undeniable connection! Their love literally jumped off the page, and don't even get me started on Vance *kill me twice...SWOON* There are entire fan pages dedicated to Vance- that's how scrumptious he is.Vance is a very powerful warlock and the son of a very bad man... Vance has been on the run since he was 5 and if his father ever catches him...The consequences will be dire.Vance sees Portia from across the school yard and knows she's his... One problem- he's not even allowed to TALK her because he's promised her father (the leader of their coven) that he will not have anything to do with her until she comes into her powers at 16.Vance waits TWO YEARS for her and the day she turns 16...Hmmm- I guess you'd better go read it!This is an absolute MUST READ!

***NOTE MY REVIEWS OFTEN CONTAIN SPOILERS***Portia Mullins thought she was a normal girl with an encyclopedia salesmen for a dad, a nurse for a mom and a crush on the hottest boy in school who didn't even know she was alive. All that changes when she turns sixteen and she finds out not only is she a witch and a powerful one at that, but her Dad is a warlock and her Grandma is a witch too. To top it off the hottest boy in school, Vance Mangum, very much knew she was alive and as a warlock himself had been counting the days to her sixteenth birthday so he could introduce himself to her. Vance explains to Portia that not only is she his soul-mate, but he's in her coven because his demon father has been hunting him trying to steal Vance's power and turn him to a demon as well. When her best friends, the wannabe Barbie doll turns into a crazy goth chick Portia knows something's up, she only hopes she can get to the bottom of it before it's too late.If you like paranormal romance, you'll most likely enjoy this books. It's fast paced with a good flow and easy to read. However, you'll also find quite a few grammar errors and I guess you'd say an immaturity in the writing that goes beyond it being a first person narrative in the eyes of a sixteen year old. The characters are first of all a bit too perfect, their only possibly bad qualities have very good reasons behind them. They really don't have character flaws in anyway and both could be described as a Mary Sue character. They also seem to accept everything blindly. Oh I'm a powerful witch, well maybe I'll express disbelieve for a couple paragraphs but then I'll roll with the punches. Oh, we're soul-mates, cool, it's what I've always wanted. They fall instantly in love without any of the doubt or getting to know each other in typical relationships. She also has an 18 year old boy turning down sex with his girlfriend because he wants to wait until she's of age and they're married. And neither of their parents care that they spend every night sleeping in the same bed. Magic or not, no eighteen year old will be spending the night in my daughter's bed when she's sixteen. Their relationship is like a PG version of an adult relationship minus the courtship where they get to know each other. Nothing in real life falls as instantly into place as these characters' relationship does. No teenager is that good or accepting either. With a little more internal conflict in the characters and some more obstacles put in their way this could have been an excellent story. A better copy editor would have help as well.I should also mention that these modern day children never even mention computers or video games or any of the other things that are normally as close to every teenage kid as the air they breath. It sort of reminded me of the PG way a mother might describe her teenage years to her children leaving out any part that could possibly be construed as a negative influence for them to copy. That said the plot was interesting and it did flow well. The writer also has a nice writing voice. If she learned to be a little meaner to her characters I feel she could write an excellent story. She has potential and I plan to read more of Weatherford books in hopes these things will improve.

Wow! I am so impressed! I was IN from the very start. The characters are beautifully written and the story is fantastic. I was on the edge of my chair, turning pages as fast as I could read them! Couldn't get enough of this book! It has all the elements of a must read. It has non-stop action, daring deeds, good vs. evil, danger and suspense, as well as being an all out love story. All of the characters have been carefully created and as a reader I found myself drawn to each of them for different reasons:Portia - she is a genuinely nice young girl, adjusts remarkably well to finding out that she is a witch, and falls HARD and FAST for the school "bad boy" Vance.Vance - the school "bad boy" but truly a powerful warlock who has been secretly in love with Portia for 2 years before they finally get to meet and find out she loves him too, he is running from his father and his father's evil plan for him.Grandma Mullins - an amazing, wise, powerful, loving, supportive woman, she leads the coven.Stacey - Portia's mother who is not magical in a witch sense, but is in her own way and who is completely comfortable in her role as the only non-magical member of the family.Sean - Portia's dad who seems to always find the right balance, he is the second most powerful person in the coven.Brad - Shelly's boyfriend who you expect to be the dumb jock with no ability to befriend the "bad boy" Vance, but who completely surprises you by being so very much more.Shelly - Portia's best friend, she falls under the spell of an evil witch, spends a bit of time being jealous of the relationship that appears to be taking her best friend but comes around. There are more characters, but obviously these are my favorites. They are so well created that I found myself completely invested in their lives in no time. It was refreshing to read a YA love story with no love triangle and even the willingness of Portia to die to save Vance doesn't rub the reader wrong.Loved the book - can't wait to read the next one!

Blood of the White Witch - Lacey Weatherford

1

This was something very unusual— at least it was for most sixteen-year-old girls. The fact I was even getting to experience this now had been the result of a significant compromise on behalf of my parents. They wanted it to happen at a much later date, but the circumstances changed, and the situation demanded we change with it. The discussions had been long and arduous, the pros and cons weighed heavily before any agreement was reached. Even now, I was pretty sure my mom and dad were still having terrible misgivings, though I could see they were trying to put on brave faces and be supportive for my sake. I appreciated that.

There. My best friend, Shelly, finished what she was doing, stepping back to survey the result. You look beautiful!

Turning, I stared at my reflection in the ceiling-to-floor mirror—barely recognizing myself—but agreeing with her assessment, without any conceit.

The dress was perfect—the square-cut neckline and tightly fitted bodice flowed into the full, bejeweled taffeta skirt with a bubble hem and chapel train. It looked as if it had been made specifically to enhance every turn and curve of my body.

My long, black hair was piled intricately in becoming swoops and swirls on the top of my head and had tiny pearl pins running throughout the design. A simple pearl-adorned comb had been inserted in the back of my hairdo, and my straight sheer veil hung softly from it.

Shelly placed a bouquet of fresh red roses, bunched together and tied with a white satin ribbon, into my hands. You’re going to knock Vance’s socks off! she said, with a soft smile.

I hope so! I laughed, thinking of my handsome groom, who was probably doing something similar to this with Brad, elsewhere in the building.

Vance and I had gone through so much together in the last few months. Magic, mystery, and mayhem, had been a large part of our existence and continued to be so. In fact, it was the reason this wedding was taking place eight months earlier than planned, but I didn’t want to think about that right now. I just wanted to savor every moment of this day.

Oh, Portia! my mom said, entering the room, her red formal dress suit rustling slightly as she closed the door.

Stopping to stare, several emotions passed through her eyes. Love and happiness appeared there first, right before worry and doubt crept in—followed by moisture. She patted her perfectly coiffed dark hair, trying to hide her reaction.

Mom, don’t you dare start with that already! I chastened. You’ll get me started, and it’ll ruin my makeup.

Sorry, sweetie. Laughing slightly, she hugged me. You’re just so beautiful!

Thanks, Mom, I replied, hugging her tightly. Is the photographer here yet? I want to get a picture of the three of us together.

Yes. She’s waiting outside. I wanted to make sure you were ready first. Releasing me, she turned toward the door.

I’ll get her, Stacey, Shelly said, rustling past in her dark red, satin dress, which hugged her flawless form. She looked more like a Barbie doll than I’d ever seen her.

The photographer came in and introduced herself politely. Hi. I’m Sam. Congratulations! You look lovely.

Thank you. It’s nice to meet you. I appreciate you coming on short notice.

No worries at all, she replied. Now let’s get the three of you posed in front of this stunning mirror so I can get your gorgeous gowns from the front and the back. Artfully positioning us, she lifted the camera. Beautiful! she said, clicking away in rapid succession. I grabbed a couple of shots of the groom and his best man before I came in here, she added. You two are going to make a fabulous looking couple.

I want to see the pictures! May I? Excitement at seeing Vance dressed for the wedding shot through me.

No! Shelly stepped in between us, placing her hands on her hips. It’s bad luck to see the groom before the wedding. You know that!

In a picture? I asked, laughing as I stared at her. I don’t think it applies.

It does if he is all dressed in a tuxedo and getting ready to marry you! Folding her arms, she gave me a hard look, signifying she wasn’t going to budge. I glanced at my mom, hoping for some backup.

I agree, she said with a shrug, though she at least tried to appear apologetic.

Fine! Forget I even asked.

A knock on the door interrupted us, and my dad’s voice came from the other side. Is it safe to enter?

Come in, Sean. Mom opened the door, and he entered, wearing a black tuxedo with a dark, red tie and a matching vest with black pinstripes running through it.

Pumpkin, you look great! His eyes lit up, and he placed a light kiss upon my cheek.

You’re working that tux pretty good yourself. I smiled, thinking he was very handsome, indeed.

He did an overly exaggerated pirouette. I don’t look too good, do I? Humor flashed in his eyes. I wouldn’t want to show up the bride.

Whatever! my mom said laughingly, playfully slapping at his shoulder. Don’t tease her at such a moment, Sean!

Perhaps you’d prefer for me to tease you? my dad responded, sidling next to her. I must say it’s obvious where Portia gets her beauty from. He grinned wickedly, and I sighed, giving a slight shake of my head.

Another rap at the door interrupted their banter, and this time the wedding coordinator stepped into the room.

Are you all ready? she asked with a smile. Everything is set to go.

Nodding, I suddenly felt a wave of butterflies rush through my stomach. I’m ready. Placing a quivering hand over my midsection, I tried to settle them.

All right! The coordinator turned to my mom. Let’s get you seated, shall we? Shelly, you go wait by the door to the chapel, and I’ll give you the signal. Vance and Brad are already at the altar.

Shelly grabbed her white bouquet of flowers, hurrying after them, leaving only my dad and me together.

It’s time, Dad said looking at me seriously. Are you sure you’re ready for this?

I’ve never been more ready for anything in my life. I took his offered arm. The real question is are you ready for this? I observed his reaction.

It’s definitely required some adjusting to, he replied honestly, gently touching my face. I certainly never imagined my daughter getting married at the age of sixteen or the fact I’d agree to it. That being said, I do realize the two of you are mature for your age. You’ve proven on several occasions you’re old enough to handle things on your own. I think it’ll work out just fine.

Thanks for having faith in us, Dad. Smiling, I squeezed his arm tenderly, knowing how difficult it had been for him.

My little girl is all grown up, he said softly, his hand trembling momentarily before he dropped it back to his side.

Gently leading me from the room, we walked in silence, stopping a few feet outside the double doors to the chapel.

Shelly was standing in the entrance, and as the music began, she took her cue from the director, starting her march down the aisle. The doors closed behind her, and the wedding planner ushered dad and me into place, making sure my dress was spread perfectly, and my veil was hanging just right.

The music changed, and the wedding march began to play. Slipping my hand back through my dad’s arm, I wondered if he felt my slight nervous tremor.

I love you, Pumpkin, he said, lightly patting my hand.

I love you too, Daddy. I smiled, and the butterflies reappeared, dancing anew in my stomach.

Swinging slowly to reveal the flower-decorated aisle in front of me, the doors opened. I lifted my gaze, past the guests and decorations, searching for the only person I was interested in seeing.

My eyes settled on him, and I saw his breath catch, a slow smile spreading across his face, lighting the whole world in front of me. I would’ve forgotten to move, I was so mesmerized by his appearance, but my dad guided me forward, toward the heroic figure that stood there waiting. I couldn’t see anything besides him—only him.

Vance Mangum. My Vance. The love of my life—my everything.

My heart began beating harder with every step I took. Perfectly groomed, as usual, his dark hair was textured in the sexy messy style I loved, his smile gleaming against the dimples of his cheeks, and the slight cleft in his chin. His bright blue eyes flashed with anticipation as he stood in his black tuxedo, complete with a white vest and tie, looking every inch the powerful man he was. He was breathtaking.

Stepping down to greet me as I approached, he took my trembling hand from my dad, squeezing it reassuringly, leading me in front of the minister.

I love you, he whispered softly into my head through the uncommon mental connection we shared.

I love you, too, I replied in the same fashion, my smile broadening.

The minister moved closer and began to speak. Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today . . . Small shivers of joy raced through my body.

Listening intently to every word, my gaze never left Vance’s face, nor did his ever leave mine. The minister spoke to us about love, commitment, and honor, as well as always being true to each other before he turned the time over for us to recite our vows.

Vance, I started, feeling as if I’d never be able to keep the excited tremor out of my voice. I give my heart to you completely. My love is my gift to you, never shaking, and unfailing. I promise to always stand by your side through thick and thin, to be your helper and your companion. I bind myself to you before God and man, promising to always support you in life and love, even into the next life. I love you. Meaningfully, I pressed his hand tighter.

Portia, I love you with all my heart. Words fail me when it comes to describing the depth of my feelings for you. You complete me in every way imaginable; you’re everything about me that is good. When I eat, sleep, live, it’s always with you in my thoughts. I accept your love and promises, offering mine to you in return. I promise to always love and support you in all your endeavors as we join together as husband and wife. I will love you for eternity. Smiling, his emotions surged into mine with great force, causing tiny prickles of desire to run over my skin in waves. There was no doubt he wanted me.

Do you, Portia Mullins, take Vance Mangum as your legal and lawful husband? the minister spoke, continuing with the service. Do you promise to love, honor, and care for him from this day forward?

Yes, I replied, my eyes tearing as I stared into Vance’s loving gaze.

Do you, Vance Mangum, take Portia Mullins as your legal and lawful wife? Do you promise to love, honor, and care for her from this day forward?

Yes, he answered, the emotion in his eyes equaling mine.

Do you have the rings? the minister asked.

Brad and Shelly both stepped forward, extending our rings. I handed my bouquet off to Shelly and turned back toward Vance.

Portia, place the ring on Vance’s left ring finger and repeat after me, the minister coached.

The white gold band slid easily over his long, masculine finger, even though I was shaking. With this ring, I thee wed, in front of God and these witnesses.

Vance took the matching ring he held and slid it tenderly into place. With this ring, I thee wed, in front of God and these witnesses. He lifted his gaze back to mine.

Let it be known these two are now joined together in the eyes of God, the eyes of the church, and in the eyes of man. What God has joined together, let no man put asunder. I now pronounce you husband and wife.

Not waiting for the minister to tell him he could kiss the bride, Vance grabbed me in a giant bear hug, kissing me passionately in front of everyone as they burst into cheers and applause.

Wrapping my arms tightly around his neck, I didn’t want to let go. Our kiss went on longer than decorum dictated it should have, but I didn’t mind. Finally, he stepped away, both of us breathless, but his eyes didn’t leave me nor did the huge smile on his face.

I present to you Mr. and Mrs. Vance Mangum, the minister said to the crowd. We turned to face them, and they cheered again.

Vance held my hand in an iron grip, leading me down the aisle, and out into the hallway. He didn’t stop there though, and I was surprised when he pulled me quickly into the first room we came to, shutting the door behind us.

Grabbing me, he dragged me flush against him and really kissed me, like I knew he wanted to do out there, letting all of his emotions move into that moment. His mouth slanted hard over mine, demanding all, yet giving all in return, as he ran his hands over my back.

Closing my eyes, I savored the feel of him pressed close, not a millimeter of space between us. I loved every breathless second of his heated assault. Little sparks of lightning rocketed through me as his hot breath mingled with mine.

Dropping my bouquet on the floor without a care, I wound my arms tightly around his neck. I stood on my tiptoes to reach him better, becoming all consumed by his kiss. Our mouths danced together in an ancient rhythm of love, speaking intimacies to one another that couldn’t be shared with mere words. All too soon, he broke away.

Wow! You look amazing! he said, gasping for air, his eyes flitting over my entire length. I’ve never seen anything that looked so good in my life.

I was just thinking the same thing about you. I grinned, noticing his lips were swollen a bit from kissing.

I love you, he said, stepping closer, this time cradling my face gently, running one of his thumbs tenderly over my lips.

I love you, too. Smiling, I looked into his beautiful blue eyes, unable to tear my gaze away.

Dang reception! he muttered under his breath, and I understood exactly what he meant.

I laughed at his disgruntled expression. Patience, Vance. Placing my hand lightly against his cheek, I caressed the hard, masculine planes there. The time will come soon enough, as I am sure you know, but right now we have guests.

They can wait, he said, kissing me again, effectively trapping me in his grasp.

Willingly, I wound my arms back around his neck and wished we could run off together right now. Leaning into the kiss, his tongue traced the contours of my lips. I opened my mouth, following him in his sensual movements until it seemed as if his very emotions would consume me. They raced forcefully through, setting me aflame as if a torch had been lit to my skin. I never wanted him to stop, but reality stepped forward, and I pulled away.

Come on, Vance. We’ve been in here kissing for a while now. Let’s go to our reception before something starts you won’t want to stop.

Too late, he said with a grin, though I noted the disappointment in his eyes. Giving in, he allowed me to take his hand and drag him to the door.

The wedding coordinator was standing outside with a knowing look. I briefly wondered if our kiss-reddened faces, and my distinct lack of lip-gloss, would surprise anyone. Returning to the bride’s room so I could retouch my makeup, the coordinator kept Vance occupied in conversation just outside. After I was finished, she directed us down the hall to the reception room where all our guests had gathered.

A man at the door stood as we approached and opened it for us, calling out to the crowd.

Please, welcome Mr. and Mrs. Mangum! his thunderous voice boomed. My heart skipped a beat at the sound of hearing me called Mrs. Mangum. I would never get sick of hearing that.

Stepping into the lavishly decorated space, with its fragrant red roses in large crystal vases, and silk-draped tables, we were immediately wrapped in a throng of well-wishers.

Slowly, we weaved our way across the room toward the head table, which was set in fine china, crystal, and silverware, stopping to visit many times. Once we were finally seated, we enjoyed a lovely meal of roasted meats, fruits, salads, and many other concoctions, which a genuinely delightful chef had prepared for us.

Afterward, when the dinner portion was complete, Vance and I headed to the dance floor for our first dance as a wedded couple. Pulling me into his arms, I was surprised at how well we moved together. We never really had the opportunity to dance with one another before now.

Holding me tightly as we swayed, his eyes never left mine, and though we didn’t speak any words, many private thoughts and feelings were conveyed in those precious minutes between us. The rest of the room slowly melted away, and he was the only other being in my universe. It was as if time had come to a complete standstill—a magical moment, a true union of souls. Guiltily, I wondered if our guests were beginning to feel neglected since the two of us were so completely absorbed with each other. I didn’t mean to be rude, but he was all I was interested in.

They understand, he said, never breaking his gaze from me.

Mmm? I asked, continuing to stare at him with starry eyes, his words not really registering.

Our guests. They won’t be offended we can’t stop looking at each other. That’s what you were thinking, right? A slight grin tipped the corner of his mouth, barely revealing one of his beloved dimples.

I nodded with a dreamy smile, suddenly wanting to kiss that charming spot.

I love you, I said again, enjoying the feel of his firm, muscular body.

He bent and kissed my lips. I responded instantly, slipping my fingers into his hair. It registered somewhere in the back of my mind that we had quit dancing to the music, but the thought was quickly brushed aside as the heat of his tender touch suddenly intensified.

I forgot we had an audience, when he ran his hand up my back, sliding underneath my veil and over my neck. A soft moan escaped my lips as he pressed me harder against him, leaving me feeling wholly wrapped up in the pure bliss of the moment.

Suddenly I was yanked away from Vance’s grasp, and we both stumbled slightly at the intrusion. I found myself whisked into my dad’s arms.

Save it for the honeymoon, son, he whispered with a laugh, briefly patting Vance on the shoulder before he spun me across the dance floor.

Blushing deeply at the comment, I glanced apologetically at Vance, who was standing stock still where we had left him with a slightly amused and somewhat bewildered expression.

The rest of the evening was spent visiting and dancing with family and friends until it was time to cut our wedding cake. It was a simple, but elegant, three-tiered masterpiece, frosted in white, with red roses, draped down it in a spiral. Artfully styled frosting gave the appearance of a basket weave around the sides with small edible pearls delicately placed throughout the design.

It almost seemed a shame to cut into something so beautiful. We picked up the knife together, slicing gently into the red velvet concoction before removing a section and placing it on a china plate. Breaking off a small piece, I used my fingers to feed it to Vance, who made a purposeful point to lick the ends of my frosting-covered appendages. This, of course, caused shivers to involuntarily race up and down my arm.

He was equally kind when it came to feeding me my slice, carefully placing the dessert in my mouth, trying not to damage my makeup, though a tiny amount of frosting made its way onto the corner of my lips. Vance took complete advantage of the situation, swooping in to kiss me, licking it away in the process.

Everyone cheered loudly as the photographer moved in, snapping pictures and forever preserving the moment on film.

Can we get out of here now . . . please? Vance pleaded under his breath with a smile.

I nodded. Absolutely. I extended my hand. Lead the way.

I was surprised when he turned instead to address our guests. I’d like to thank all of you for making the trip here on such short notice to support us this evening, but the time has come for us to say goodnight. Feel free to stay and enjoy yourselves for as long as you’d like.

Taking my hand in his, we waved at our guests and ran through the throng toward the door that led to the hall. Many happy well-wishers followed us, as we made our way out of the building to the waiting limousine. Waving once more, we climbed in, the chauffeur closing the door behind us.

As soon as we were out of sight of the venue, Vance slipped an arm around my waist, sliding me closer and began kissing me in earnest.

Laughing, I placed my hand against his chest, attempting to push him back a little, feeling my blush creep over my face. Calm down! We don’t want to scar the driver with our public display of affection.

We have privacy glass, he mumbled, hardly breaking his stride, leaning in to place a lingering kiss against the curve of my neck.

That may be, but we’ve waited this long—you can wait a few minutes longer. I shoved at him even harder. I want it to be just right. You know . . . special.

He smiled, sighing before he released me. Fine, he replied, drawing the word out in exasperation. I should’ve known you’d make me work for it.

Hey! I slapped him lightly on the shoulder with my rose bouquet, and a couple of the petals broke loose, drifting into his lap. What’s that supposed to mean?

It means you’re a tease. He laughed, winking, clearly enjoying toying with me.

Whatever! I turned away slightly, pretending to be annoyed with his behavior.

Hooking his finger under my chin, he turned my face back to his. I love you. He smiled, staring deep into my eyes, and my heart beat faster.

I know. I smiled back, unable to look away. And I love you, too.

We pulled up to the towering hotel, and the driver exited the vehicle, coming to open the door.

Thank you! Vance said, tipping the man generously after he helped me exit the vehicle.

Many happy wishes to you both, sir.

Practically dragging me through the lobby, I had to jog to keep up with Vance, much to the delighted stares of several people passing by. We found our way into the elevator, which was empty, thankfully. He kissed me enthusiastically during the ride up, not stopping until the doors opened on our floor.

Running down the hall like a pair of giddy schoolchildren to the penthouse suite he booked for us, we paused so he could unlock the door. Grinning, he picked me up, swinging me into his arms. I gave a squeal of delight as he carried me over the threshold, kicking the door closed behind us. He carried me through the main living space and into the dark bedroom.

Suddenly everything was bathed in a warm glow as what looked to be a million white pillar candles, of various sizes, flamed magically to life, illuminating a beautifully decorated gigantic master suite.

Soft music filled the air around us, and it was apparent Vance had been planning ahead for this evening.

Your room, Mrs. Mangum, he said,
