      Coming onto the ward that night I should have guessed it was going to be a crappy shift. A very crappy shift. The first indication was right before me in the form of Dr Harper yelling abuse at one of the other nurses.

      Dr Harper was one of those doctors where you were damned if you did and damned if you didn’t. Blood test ordered and results arrived? If you didn’t ring it through to him, he’d want it and abused the staff for not doing so. If you did ring it through to him, he’d abuse you for disturbing his night (even if he was on call) and tell you he didn’t want the results until morning. Then he’d hang up in your ear.

      So seeing him yelling at a nurse was something not that unusual. It didn’t matter to Dr Harper that the nurse in question was a night shifter, like me, and had just walked through
