About this ebook

This book was written specifically to help amateur photographers capture stunning, action images of boats. The lessons can be applied to powerboats, sailboats, large, small, fast or slow boats. Technique is more important than equipment and the reader will learn how to get the most with the camera he already owns. The author draws on his many years of nautical photography experience and illustrates this guide with over fifty of his own photographs with original camera settings included. There are chapters on locations, positioning, composition, and camera settings. See what is possible by shooting from shore, a dock or an anchored boat. Also offered are examples of photographing from a chase boat. Learn new ways to have fun with your camera!

    Introduction

This book is written specifically for amateur photographers who wish to improve their action photography of boats. Powerboats, sailboats, big boats and small boats can all be photographed in action and these techniques will give you the tools to create exciting images. Learn how to choose a location and set up a simple photo shoot with your boating friends. Understand the benefits and hazards of photographing from a chase boat and by standing in the water.

The camera you have now may be very adequate and you shouldn’t automatically think that you need the most expensive gear. This book will tell you how to get the most with what you have.

There will not be much detailed discussion about photographic principles. There are many comprehensive resources that can provide good education, including the manual that came with your camera. Instead, this book will concentrate on such issues as technique, positioning, composition, timing, etc. More than fifty action boat photographs, taken by the author, are included to illustrate the discussions and provide inspiration. The original camera settings are included for reference.

Photographing boats can range anywhere from relatively easy to very difficult. In every case, though, photographers
