GREAT AUNT GERT AND THE OUTLAW

    by Velda Brotherton

This story was told for the truth by Great-Aunt Gert when I was a youngster as we sat on the front porch or our log house in the Ozarks:

The afternoon I saw three men shove a shiny black Dodge Touring car off into the creek started out as an ordinary summer day. Hot and still, like the Ozarks are in July. After riding a good two or three hours, me and Maybelle had stopped to rest. It was my first time out riding the new mare and she was jumpy. Hated the side-saddle and fought me getting on and off. Determined to win the battle, I slipped my knee over the pommel and slid to the ground, her dancing and prancing.

Just as I lifted the quirt to teach her a lesson, a distant hollering drew me up short.

Startled, I forgot all about Maybelle and hunkered behind some thick cedar branches to see what the hurrah was all about. Underfoot something small skittered through last year's fall of leaves, and I covered my mouth to stop a startled yelp.

Down below, where an old logging road followed a flat bench, three men stood behind a big sedan. They appeared to be arguing. Maybelle tossed her head and whickered. I patted her neck, then leaned forward.

What in the world were they up to?

One of them laughed, the other said something and then all three guffawed so loud a flock of crows in a nearby oak answered them back. The strangers lined up at the trunk
