      Just Another Day at the Office

      I answered the desk phone. Yes, Mr. Gannon?

      Toby, my boss asked, are we ready for our 11:30 meeting?

      I looked at my desk clock. 11:22. I'll be there on time, sir I said.

      You always are, Toby, he replied kindly before he hung up his end of the line.

      Morning meetings with Barton Gannon did not take place every day, but they always took place at the same time of the day so we had some flexibility with the lunch hour should they go longer than initially planned. Even if the meetings happened every day, you'd hear no complaints from me. Mr. Gannon was great to work for and with, and he did pay me well over the usual salary of someone in my position. I mean, there aren't too many businessmen that will hire a guy as an Executive Assistant. But my being a male in a normally female-dominated job has its perks.

      Sometimes Mr. Gannon's business required us being on the road with some overnight stays. As if a businessman traveling with a female secretary didn't raise plenty of eyebrows in and of itself, stay-overs in hotels with a member of the opposite sex is like putting up a neon sign. But, with me, Mr. Gannon could save some business expense by allowing me to share in a business-class suite.

      My serving as Mr. Gannon's personal assistant also made the ever-present, over-jealous Mrs. Gannon much easier for her husband to deal with. And, I certainly didn't attract flirtatious advances from the usual vendor or drop-by sales representative.
