      INTRODUCTION

      Language is defined in most circles as a communication of thoughts and feelings through a system of arbitrary signals, such as voice sounds, gestures, or written symbols. It also consists of such a system including its rules for combining its components, such as words. Although all creatures communicate in some fashion, our chief concern is the system as used by a nation, people, or other distinct community; often contrasted with dialect.

      Loaded Language is a language construct, such as a word or a question that is said to be loaded if it carries meaning or implications beyond its strict definition.

      Loaded words are words or phrases, which have strong emotional overtones or connotations and which evoke strongly positive (or negative) reactions far beyond the specific meaning of the word which is listed in the dictionary.

      Use of the phrase loaded language to describe the writing or speech of another implies an accusation of demagoguery or of pandering to the audience.

      Some loaded language is used in ways that are deliberately ambiguous, doubtful and uncertain or even contradictory. Loaded language as an umbrella term is sometimes used to describe spin, euphemisms and doublespeak.

      In public relations, spin is a usually pejorative term signifying a heavily biased portrayal in one's own favor of an event or situation that is designed to bring about the most positive result possible. While traditional public relations relies more on creative presentation of the facts, spin often, though not always, implies disingenuous, deceptive and/or highly manipulative tactics to sway audiences away from widespread (and often commonsense) perceptions.

      As an example of spin, is the term Al-Islam,(THE ISLAM). This term was exponentially used upon the ascension of Warith Deen Muhammad (aka Wallace Muhammad), the son of Elijah Muhammad, into the leadership of the Nation of Islam in 1975. It was no secret that Warith did not believe his father, Messenger Elijah Muhammad, was who he said he was – the Last Messenger of Allah (God). Consequently, once in control, the language, terminology and respective jargon of the Nation of Islam began to change and was reflected in inner office memos and especially Muhammad Speaks, the official national newspaper of the Nation of Islam.

      Elijah Muhammad became the honorable master Elijah Muhammad, as though the term master was one that could actually be conferred; yet, once this process was established, it had taken the awe associated with it and made the title master a mere badge of patronization. What we must understand is that until that point, no one among so-called Negroes had ever addressed anyone with a title of master and the associated divine respect and reverence along with it. The closest we had ever gotten was when we called the white man master; although we didn’t think he was god. When the term master began to be carelessly thrown around, eventually all the awe we once had for the name had dissipated, which by the way was the original intent; this likewise was the ulterior motive behind introducing the term Al-Islam (THE ISLAM).

      When Wallace and the political engineers instituted the term Al-Islam, it was in the vein of suggesting that there was an Islam that was a standard above and apart from that which had previously been taught to the American so-called Negroes. This implied that what Messenger Elijah Muhammad taught was an off-brand or an inferior type of Islam. Along with the new spin was the teaching that what Elijah brought was merely a wake up message and not THE REAL ISLAM. Consequently, the NEW Islam being introduced in place of what Messenger Elijah Muhammad taught was something one should desire and thus be more than happy to relinquish the old teachings that served as a crutch for our blackness. Islam, as taught by Elijah Muhammad, Messenger of Allah, was made to appear inferior, cheap, base and designed for slaves, and if you were new, wise and having arrived, you were ready for the real Islam, and not the remedial slow form. Of course, who wants to feel slow, babyish, and behind the crowd?

      Wallace and those with him was successful in usurping the Nation of Islam’s distinction to a degree. It was done so physically and spiritually brutal (over 40 years of disciplined progress), until many just went back to the streets from whence they came, some committed suicide and some simply rationalized it enough to stay.

      Minister Farrakhan stayed for a while until he decided he could do it better, but in the name of rebuilding the Messenger’s work.

      Hundreds got behind the idea, and what Wallace crudely attempted to do with an axe, Louis Farrakhan appears to be successful in doing
