About this ebook

‘I will bet you fifty quid it’s a German up there.’
‘Well said John lets go find out what he wants, and there’s the little matter of Lisa to settle yet don’t forget.’ When they got to the top of the cliff. Alan went to the car carrying two air bottles. He could see that the car looked different in some way. Then he shouted. ‘Oh no look what the bastard has done.’ He was pointing to the two front wheels. The German had let down the two front tyres. ‘That’s great now one of us will have to walk all the way back to Larggs to get one of the tyres filled. ‘I will go said Alan.’ Then Debbie spoke up. ‘Now you might not have to go.’
‘What do you mean.’
‘ If we have any air left in the bottles, and if we take off the mouthpiece we should be able to fill the tyre it may work.’ John spoke next. ‘You don’t say very much Debbie but when you do it’s worth listening to that’s brilliant.
When he got back to the Hotel John said I think we should give diving a rest for today. I don’t know if you know Alan but you can dive too much.
‘Yes said Alan, we should stop for one day and it will give us a chance to look Larggs over, all we have seen is the front of the Hotel and the inside of the coffee shop.’
They had a look along the sea front the girls looking at the shops John and Alan just talking. When they came to the end of the shops and also the end of the sea front. John said. ‘Let’s take a walk along the beach we might find something there.’
About half way along they saw an old timer sitting besides an upturned boat. They saw at a glance that he was very old. When they asked him if he knew anything about Vikingar. He smiled and said. ‘Well yes I do laddy I have lived in Larggs man and boy for eighty seven years and there’s knout I don’t know about the coastline along here. John said. ‘During the Second World War it was reported that a German submarine had sunk off Larggs, do you know anything about it Sir.’
‘Oh I remember it well, but that’s a funny thing you’re the second one this week to ask that.’ The old man looked them over and said. ‘I will you lot because your British and not German, I think the submarine is still there somewhere waiting to be found, it was after the storm that week that I found the sailor’s cap, and on it was a number.’
‘Do you recall what the number was Sir.’
‘I can do better than that I still have the cap, so you see I think the submarine is still someplace, would you like to see the cap.’
‘That would be great Sir said Alan.’
‘Oh don’t be calling me Sir my name is Robert Bob to you.’ He laughed out loud then said. If you would like to see the cap I have it up at my house, mind you it’s a bit grubby now but it’s there if you want to see it, have you got a sheet of paper and a pen or pencil, then I can give you my address and you can call on me anytime after 4 o-clock because I won’t go home until four or so it’s up to you its there if you want to see it, by the way a friend of mine found another cap at the same time I did, but he died three years ago.’
‘Did you tell the Germans anything about your cap.’

    CHAPTER 1

    VIKINGAR

It all began when John Willis and his wife Lisa were in Scotland on Holiday. They were staying in the small town of Largg’s on the West Coast.

They were on a diving Holiday they would drive up and down the coast just looking for a good dive. They would stop every time they saw somewhere that looked good to them. They went to different locations every day.

One morning they set off from their hotel The Canny Lad to go south to a place called Fairlie. The hotel porter had told John that good diving was to be had at Fairlie.

When they got to Fairlie it was deserted not a soul around for miles. They went down to the beach and donned their wet suits. They entered the water. John had told Lisa that she should always keep within ten feet of him. And if we see a seal shout at it or it might think you’re a mermaid.’

‘Oh don’t be so soft.’ And she laughed.

They swam along the beach and saw a number of good-sized fish they had a good hour swim then John gave Lisa the sign to go to the surface pointing at his watch.

When they got back to the beach John said to Lisa. ‘Do you think we should use the other two bottles here or should we try someplace different.’

‘Oh I think we should find somewhere that has some rocks, I mean this place is good to see the marine life but that’s about all.’

They sat and talked for about ten minutes then they stripped off their suits and got dressed. They left to go to a point on the map up the coast a place called Skelmorlie. When they got to the beach they put on their diving suits. This time there was an outcrop of rocks. John said. ‘This time we have some rocks for my lady.’ She looked at him and replied. ‘You want rocks as much as I do you big lug.’

She had said this pointing her finger at him she also had a large smile on her face. She bent forward and gave him a big kiss. They swam around the beach until their air ran out and they had to call it a day.

They returned to their hotel. John saying. ‘I had no idea we had gone that far it was a long journey back don’t you think pet.’

‘It was John but I enjoyed every bit of the way, it is lovely.’

They got back to The Canny Lad.

And the first thing they did was take a shower. Then they went down to their evening meal.

As they were eating John said. ‘Tomorrow I think we should try up north again, we might get more rocky diving there.’

‘Yes pet that would be a good idea.’

After their meal they went into the bar. They got a surprise when they saw Danny the porter waiting on behind the bar. ‘Hello Danny I never expected to see you behind the bar.’ Danny replied in his Scottish drawl. ‘Yes it’s to be expected of everyone in the hotel staff to take their turn at the bar, now what can I get you Sir’

‘Oh Danny call me John and this is Lisa.’

‘I’d love to but I would get my head in my hands if they caught me calling you John.’

‘O-k Danny but we don’t mind, I will have a pint and what do you want darling.’

‘I’ll just have a white wine thanks.’ They drank until about nine thirty then they went up to bed they were very tired. John said. It must be the air.’

The next morning they went North they took the A78 along the shore.

They went by Skelmorlie where they had dived the day before. They carried on up the main A78 until they came to a place marked on the map as Vikingar. This was a tiny village of about three cottages it was just north of Skelmorlie. They drove past the village for about half a mile. Then they parked the car. John had stopped the car at the lowest part of the cliff so they would not have to climb down the cliff and it would be a lot easier to carry the bottles when they got their suits on they entered the water.

They swam out to sea for about five hundred yards. Then they

Made a turn to their right to the rocky part of the shore. John turned to face Lisa. He made the sign that they should go to the surface. He pointed at his air bottle on his back. When they broke the surface John looked towards the shore to try to pinpoint where they were. He wanted to return. He could see that they were in a line with a weather cone on top of the cliff the cliff was very high at this point but he could see a path which he thought was good for them to get to the next time they came. John spat his mouth peace out and shouted at Lisa. ‘We will have to swim back on the surface pet no air left so lets go.’ They made their way back to the beach near where they had parked their car.

Later In the afternoon they had lots of time to spare. So they took the car on the road to Paisley that was where they had to go to recharge their bottles.

While John went to fill the bottles Lisa went to do a bit of shopping. When they went on holiday Lisa always took her mother an ornament back. He dropped her off outside a pub called The Rob Roy he said he would meet her back at the pub in about an hour.

Later that night in the hotel they were sitting having their evening meal in the restaurant. They were talking about the rocky part of their dive. Lisa turned her head in the direction of the table on their left. ‘Do you see that lot to the table on our left John.’

    ‘Yes what about them.’

‘Well they are all some kind of foreigners I think.’

They went back to talking about the day’s dive.

Later on when they were sitting in the bar. The Germans came in and ordered drinks. Then the one that looked like the leader and also the oldest one there. Asked the barman if he knew of a cave under water that went by the name of The Monks Hat. The barman said that he did not, but that he was not a local and that he had only lived there for two years.

He told him that a local man would be in about 9 o-clock. ‘He is getting on in years but I think he should know what you want.’
