I had never been to Koreatown before. I'd driven by what I thought was maybe the outskirts of the neighborhood probably a dozen times, on my way to the movie studio in Hollywood. Asian characters adorned the rough plazas and boarded up homes- sometimes with an English translation in cheap, ugly lettering; Foot Massage, Acupuncture, Princess Nail…things like that. It looked like a rough street, but there were lots of rough streets in Los Angeles. In two minutes I would be winding through a neighborhood of mansions anyway, then I would be at the studio, hanging out with celebrities and millionaires. Well, watching them work, but that was over now.

Now, I was sitting in my car in a parking lot in the heart of Koreatown. It didn't look or feel like Los Angeles. I felt like I was in some Korean/Mexican hybrid city. It was a strange place, I thought. I nervously tugged at my little black dress. I was about to become a modern-day geisha.

I finally got the nerve to call Tommy, my boss.

Hello? answered an Asian man’s voice.

    Hi, is this Tommy?

    Yes, who is this?

This is Audrey, I’m here for my interview.

My real name isn’t Audrey. In Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Audrey Hepburn plays Holly Golightly, a lonely call girl. Most people ignore this fact, because Audrey is the epitome of class and Holly is such a lovable character, but that’s what Holly was. She accompanied men to dinner in exchange for money. The same thing I was about to do.

After ten minutes, a white van showed up as promised. It was a minivan, not one of those white murder vans with no windows, but still…it was a van, driven by a stranger. And I was expected to get in.

Two blonde British girls in tiny black dresses scurried over to the van in front of me. I was relieved not to be the only white girl attempting this line of work. As I shook Tommy’s hand, a tall girl with long dark hair joined us. Three of us were new. The older blonde, Colleen, sat in the front seat, assuring us that it wasn’t a bad job, easy money. She had been working for Tommy for almost a year. Her younger blonde friend, Sarah, changed her shoes from grimy flip-flops to high heels. The dark haired newcomer introduced herself as Holly. I smiled. I was Audrey and she was Holly, but we were both playing the same game. She asked a lot of questions. Tommy and Colleen explained there was no sex, no drugs, no nudity. It’s never reassuring when your boss tries to convince you you’re not about to become a prostitute, I thought. Tommy kept reinforcing that we were not allowed to have sex with the customers, and if the police ever raided a club, that was okay, because this job was completely legal and they were looking for underage drinkers and illegal immigrants. As long as we were legal to work in America and legal to drink, we would be fine. Holly turned to me, her partner in the back seat of the van.

What are you thinking? she whispered to me. I put on my cool girl face.
