About this ebook

This book offers everyone, regardless of whether they are sedentary or sportive, young or old, male or female, a way to obtain the precious sense of confidence in the face of impending threat, especially with the factor that can be summarised as "human gone berserk". Ninety five percent of the cases of impending violence can be averted through negotiation. This book delves deep into the causes and patterns of fear that we can learn to extinguish, think clearly, risk-assess correctly, and use our best judgment to deal with the threat. There are also clear explanations about what can be done if that remaining five percent comes to pass, so that all involved parties can emerge from the scene with minimum possible trauma.

Dr.Ozlem Kurdoglu

I am a Medical Doctor, Published Author, Certified Counsellor, Official Translator, Literary Editor, Expert and Trainer on: How To Survive Attacks For People With Lesser Muscle. I'm also a kickboxing, Tai Chi, and Muay Thai practitioner, scuba diver, and mother of one. My sci-fi pentology is in Turkish, the language of my country. The first four of them have been print-published in Turkey and sold out. For readers who can read Turkish, the e-book versions of my sci-fi novels are available worldwide via Smashwords. (If online translators continue with their present speed of upward trend of success, my novels might pretty well become readable for all sci-fi followers throughout the world soon enough :) ) "Overcome Violence" is my first non-fiction book as well as my first work that I wrote in two languages, both in English and Turkish. It is also the first time with this book that I discovered my ability to draw illustrations defining motion. I prepared the illustrations that describe my selection of ten basic self-defense moves myself.

    === PROLOGUE ===

    All recommendations in this book have been prepared with carefully constructed sentences where gender-specific stereotyping has been purposefully avoided.

    That is because the subject of self-defense would better not be limited to controversies between men and women. There are millions of people on this world who lead relatively sedentary and urban lives. Most people could very well use some self confidence derived from knowing that they are not necessarily destined to feel helpless in the face of the factor known as human gone berserk.

    For that reason, gender-specific expressions have been avoided in all descriptions throughout the book as much as possible.

    Of course there are sections like domestic violence where statistics show for a fact that the majority of victims are females and the stereotypical attacker is the male party. It may be difficult for a male reader to go through that section identifying with the victimized side. Male readers might even inadvertently feel somewhat accused, despite all heartfelt reassurances from me that it is not my intention to seek out or point a finger at any particular culprit in this book.

    So please, bear with me and trust me when I say: Awareness Is Bliss. The aim here is to reach every individual who would feel better with this ability in their pockets, regardless of whether they are male or female, young or old, etc. Nobody can tell which of us might one day need to face an attacker with a bigger muscle mass and physical strength than ourselves. And none of us want that to loom as yet another factor that shadows our precious sense of security.

    === Chapter 1 ===

    ACQUIRE THE ABILITY OF SELF-DEFENSE

    Inquiries about how to protect ourselves from violence are mostly met with responses that center around the same piece of advice: Try your best not to be where trouble comes.

    Know your environment. Plan ahead. Park your vehicle in well lit areas. Do not fumble around in your purse for your car keys or house keys, have them ready in your hand when you approach the door. Refrain from sticking to predictable routines so you can avoid getting yourself ambushed.

    Main theme: Act upon the closest estimate of whatever evil might be lurking ahead for you. Think up of precautions to forestall the buggers.

    Because you are a vulnerable creature. The predator will stalk. There is nothing any of us can do about that. So would you please refrain from becoming the target.

    That's right, it makes enough sense at first sight. Problem is, there are times when we allocate more than half of our mental bandwidth to security measures, but trouble still finds a way to seep in through cracks and come at us.

    So we still need to discuss what happens when the rubber hits the road and all that plausible advice becomes just about as functional as bla bla bla.

    For starters, we will hereby assume that all of these precautions somehow failed and you feel an uh-oh situation at bay.

    The aim of this book is to shed light on what the party with the lighter muscle mass can do in case of a violent situation, and how best to think in order to spare oneself as much as possible from trauma. All mental cues required for the process are based on the backing of supporting scientific information.

    === Chapter 2 ===

    FIRST STEP OF NOT BEING A VICTIM

    Imagine yourself as me, a medical intern whose shift ends at three thirty in the morning. You have no car, and it takes half an hour of walk to your place. You have your own personal reasons to seriously dislike the idea of curling up temporarily on a hospital bed or gurney just to wait for daylight to arrive. What would you do?

    What I used to do was leave my fellow intern friends grumbling and shaking their heads in disbelief at my back, get out of the hospital building, and walk home.

    What business would a female in her twenties have, walking alone along the streets of a Middle Eastern country at four in the morning? Goodness knows I'm not exactly the type to dissolve into the background. Plus, I used to be
