Yoga Facts - Dr.King
Prologue
Going by the large number of books on Yoga published both in print as well as electronic media, this ancient practice seems to be quite popular. Whole lots of things in the name of Yoga are propagated, both through books as well as through institutionalized channels. Some of these ‘techniques’ are unique ‘inventions’ of the propagator or ‘rediscoveries’ of some ancient forgotten/secret technique. At the same time, there are lots of scientific studies - for or against Yoga - that are selectively published. In such a scenario, a serious Yoga enthusiast often finds himself/ herself lost.
What exactly is Yoga? Yoga means different things to different people. For most people Yoga is all about body postures. For some people Yoga is some kind of mystic practice that is supposed to bestow wonderful things to the practitioner. In this book I am talking about the ancient system of Yoga as described by Patanjali in his Yoga Sutra, sometime during 200 B.C. My choice of this system is not arbitrary, but has to do with several reasons that become evident when I answer the FAQs later. Moreover, proponents of most Yoga variants claim Patanjali as the source. So, it is important to know what Patanjali has said. Contextually, I may also refer to Buddhist meditation techniques that are equally ancient and have lot in common with Yoga.
In this small book I don’t intend to cover all questions that arise in the minds of a serious Yoga practitioner. I have selected a few but most important questions that sometimes deter a newcomer from following the Yoga path, or land him/ her in disillusionment.
In the following chapters, I will take up the questions one by one and try to give the answers
