    Chapter One: Introduction

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov was first published in English in 1955. It is known to be one of the most popular novels ever written in the world. Though it was written and published in 1955, its popularity has not gone down.

The book was first published in 1955 in Paris, and then it was published in New York in 1958. It was originally written in Russian language, but it was later translated into English by Vladimir Nabokov himself.

For several decades the novel remained in discussion among literary circles all over the world for its controversial subject.

Professor Humbert Humbert, about 38 years old, is the protagonist and unreliable narrator of the novel. He is obsessed with the 12 year old Dolores Haze. The professor becomes sexually involved with that girl after he becomes her stepfather. The private name of Dolores is Lolita.

The novel has highly noticeable writing style, owing to his highly subjective narrative. The protagonist and narrator, Humbert continues to draw on his fragmented memories. The prose style is highly sophisticated. The narrator expresses himself through his sincerity and melancholy, obviously to gain the sympathy of the reader.

Towards the end of the story, the narrator begins to call himself as a ‘maniac’ who has deprived Dolores of her childhood.

After the publication of the book, Lolita was successful to attain the status of a classic. It became one of the best known and most controversial novels of the 20th century.

In pop culture a sexually precocious girl began to be called Lolita. The novel was adapted into a movie in 1962 by Stanley Kubrick. It was again made into a film in 1997 by Adrian Lyne.

The novel has also been adapted many times for stage. Two operas have also been produced, based on the story of the novel. Two ballets were also produced and they were highly successful, however, a musical that was made on the basis of the story of the novel failed.

From 1923 to 2005, Lolita has been in the list of 100 Best Novels in English language. The list is issued by Time.

Lolita stands fourth on the Modern Library’s 1998 list of the 100 Best Novels of the 20th century.

It was also included in the 100 Best Books of All time in 2002. The list was made by the Norwegian Book Club. Though almost seven decades have passed since the publication of Lolita, it still retains its appeal and it is sold in large numbers even today.

Now the book is also available for free on several public domains on the internet in ebook forms.

    Chapter Two: Plot Overview

The novel Lolita has a fictional Foreword. According to the foreword, the protagonist and narrator of the novel, Humbert died of coronary thrombosis after finishing the manuscript of his story.

The foreword also says that Mrs. Richard Schiller, Lolita, passed away while giving birth to a stillborn girl on Christmas Day, 1952. At the time of her death, she was seventeen years old.

Humbert happens to be a literary scholar. He has been attracted to young girls for very long time.
