This would be a good book for a spectator in the sport, wanting to know a little about skating leading up to the Sochi olympics, but I find this was not very helpful for me, a competitive skater, wanting to know more about the technical requirements. Good for someone who doesn't know anything about skating, and would like to broaden their knowledge though.
ps. It is a little out of date, given that we are past the Sochi games, and some of the skaters ie Yu-na Kim, have retired.

History

Figure skating started as a practical messenger service in the 13th century. The Dutch used the canals to maintain communication in winter by skating from village to village. Ice skating spread from there to France, Germany and England and was enjoyed by notable historical figures such as Marie Antoinette and Johan Wolfgang von Goethe.

Over the years, ice skating evolved into several sports. The first figure skating was made possible by the invention of steel bladed skates by American Edward Bushnell in 1850. Steel blades made complex turns and maneuvers possible.
