Preface

This book is designed to be simple, straightforward, and relevant with the framework and understanding that policies, agendas, and curriculums change. However, the most important factor and most effective teacher in a child’s life is YOU, not the status quo system. YOU are the maestro of your child’s academic journey. You lay the foundation on which the other teachers in his/her life will build. Don’t build a weak foundation.

One of the most important things to understand is that solid academic practices need to be put into place as soon, in a child’s life, as possible. People begin the learning process even before they are born. This book is a step by step guide that focuses on the academic development process in order to support student success and to maximize potential. When I refer to college, I am using it as a general term for any post-secondary program such as a university, a community college, the military, apprenticeships, on the job training programs, etc.

American students no longer just compete with each other for educational opportunities and jobs, they compete with the WORLD. U.S. students fall behind 31 countries in math proficiency and behind 16 countries in reading proficiency, according to the 2011 study, "Globally Challenged: Are U.S. Students Ready to Compete" by Harvard’s Program on Education Policy and Governance. Everyone wants their child to grow to be independent and successful; this book is just one of many resources to help you make that happen.

America faces many challenges...but the enemy I fear most is complacency. We are about to be hit by the full force of global competition. If we continue to ignore the obvious task at hand while others beat us at our own game, our children and grandchildren will pay the price. We must now establish a sense of urgency."

— Charles Vest, Former President Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Chapter One: Infant to Preschool

I was still in college majoring in Biology (Teaching) when my first child was born. I also worked full time and sometimes part time throughout college because I was totally responsible for the care of my daughter. Needless to say, I was very busy but I took my daughter’s education seriously before she was even born. I grew up in a family that took education seriously so I knew no other way to think about it. These are the practices that I put into place:

1. I always had books visible in my home. A neighbor once sought my advice concerning the problems that her children were having in school. I
