From Scribd: About the Book

In The Bears on Hemlock Mountain, Jonathan sets out to retrieve a pot from his aunt at the request of his mother. He is worried that he will encounter bears along the way, but everyone around him is insistent that there are no bears on Hemlock Mountain. Despite what they all say, he still feels very cautious.

Jonathan acquires the large stew pot from his aunt and begins his return journey home without yet spotting a bear. As night begins to fall, Jonathan starts to hear noises and becomes frightened. In a moment of creative innovation, he turns the large stew pot upside down and hides inside. What if people are wrong and there really are bears on the mountain? If there aren’t any bears, then what is making those sounds?

The Bears on Hemlock Mountain is a Newbery Medal-winning book written by Alice Dalgliesh and illustrated by Helen Sewell. The art in this book is subtle and old-fashioned, in the best way. It is a timeless read that can be passed down from child to child.

The winter had been a cold one. Even now, in early spring, there was snow on the ground. The birds and the squirrels and the rabbits had a hard time finding anything to eat, so every day Jonathan remembered to feed them. Jonathan loved animals and birds. This book is part of the soundtrack to my childhood. I highly recommend it. (My mother saved my copy and gave it to me at my bridal shower; I hadn't seen the book in probably 20 years. Mine sits on my shelf between my other lifetime favorites: Nancy Drew, All the King's Men, The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, and What the Dog Saw.)

Age Appropriateness: IntermediateGenre: Realistic FictionReview: This is a good example of realistic fiction, because people encounter bears in real life.Comments: - Talk about the setting of this book, many kids if they are from the city may not understand what a farmhouse is like. - Use words from the book for vocab - Discuss what students should do if they saw a bear in real life.Media: Ink
