I get up from the floor, holding my daughter's old doll in my hand. I'm alone now like I have been since they killed my friend - ripping him to pieces in front of my eyes. They're lurking somewhere and I don't want them to hear me.
And how did all this happen, you may ask? Well, I don’t know the answer to that. One moment things were normal, and the next everything was different. They rule the world now, or at least I think they do. The only thing I think about is why it hasn't affected me? I know, I’ve seen all the films like I Am Legend with Will Smith and 28 Days Later directed by Danny Boyle – even that funny one Shaun Of The Dead. In the first two an airborne disease is the cause, but here I've got no idea. Maybe it's because I lack the linguistic skills in the Polish language, and didn’t understand all the warnings the Polish news channels repeated time and time again. All I can remember was the report about the French village which some people believed would be the only safe place when our civilisation ended. And that’s funny, because it is the end of the world for me now, though I didn’t expect it would end with mad-headed carnivorous zombies roaming the land. I expected something like an asteroid attack, worldwide tsunamis, or the loss of our planet’s gravitational force.
Before I go on, though, I suppose I should tell you a little about myself, as I am, I think, the only one left of my kind: My name's Patrick Kowalski. The ‘w’ is pronounced ‘v'. My father is (if he’s still alive) Polish and my mother was (God rest her soul) Irish.
After my university studies at Oxford, where I read mathematics, I decided to live in my father’s homeland which I hadn’t visited since I'd been a small boy and Poland had been a communist country. My educational background initially stopped me pursuing a career as an English language teacher in one of the many private language schools in the Polish capital, Warsaw. So, after I'd enrolled on a teacher-training course, where I could gain the appropriate technical skills and formal qualifications, I began my adventure as a trainee teacher of the English language. My intelligence helped me acquire the practical knowledge quickly, and before I could say ‘cześć’ (hello in Polish) I'd received my teaching certificate which allowed me to teach legally as a native speaker of English.
I started off well, impressing my superiors. I also met a girl at this time, Kasia, who made my life in Warsaw much easier.
Years passed and we got married and had a lovely child. We bought our own flat. Later I started my own language school, which became successful. The future looked bright and I had little to complain about.
2012 came. Things looked even more positive – Poland was going to be co-host of the European football championships, and everybody in the country was excited about it. There had never been more to celebrate.
The summer came and went (the tournament was a great success) and then December was upon us. Okay, I hadn’t believed all that December 21st gibberish. I took it as a joke. Yet everywhere – from Facebook, Youtube and Twitter to every publication in our sweet world (how
