One For All - Michael Soldat

    Chapter 1

Writhing in a rumpled bed, a young woman breathed heavily as labor worked on her body to get her child out. Having been bedridden for nearly a week now, she was more than ready to finish this grueling process. Her husband held her hand at bedside while a doctor from the city attended to the  baby. In the doorway on the opposite side of the room stood a local official wiping his tired eyes. Every baby had to be recorded, and generally they did not opt to be born during business hours.

Push, my dear, push ! the doctor said.

The woman obliged, squeezing her husband's hand desperately. Her doctor gazed on in delight: the baby was coming.

Minutes passed as the child resisted being brought into this new world. The official yawned repeatedly, threatening to fall asleep even amid this woman's yelps of pain and the doctor's loud instruction. Waiting outside, the official was stifling back tears.

What is it, sir? The child seemed normal to me! the doctor offered.

Medically, yes. Unfortunately, there were issues of a different nature. It... does not bode well. I'll have to report this to my superiors. Poor kid.

The doctor patted the official on the back as they began their walk back into town.

    Chapter 2

    Another dead dog.

Miles had only lived through seventeen years so far, yet he had lost enough pets for a lifetime. Living up in the drafty, exposed hills was tough enough for many animals, he reasoned, so perhaps it was an unlucky streak. Whatever the cause was, there was little time to think on it. After a short ceremony, his father helped dig a hole to bury the poor hound. After, it was back to work for the both of them.

A farming family, Miles and his parents held a few acres up on the plateau that circled the valley where Pios, a bustling
