About this ebook

From Three Block War: U.S. Marines in Iraq, author Matt Zeigler ‘chopped’ Fallujah 5K; which chronicles the hard-core ground assault of 1st Battalion, 8th Marines during Operation Phantom Fury, the second battle of Fallujah in November 2004. Hailing from the swamps of Camp Lejeune, the proud warriors of 1/8 proved 2nd Marine Division was second to none! Unlike other Marine and army units that assaulted Fallujah in amtracks, tanks, LAVS, Humvees, Strykers or Bradleys, the 1/8 assaulted on foot the entire three-mile depth of Fallujah; which became known as the ‘Fallujah 5K.’ Fallujah’s treacherous streets and alleys thrived with mujahideen wielding AK-47s and machine guns. While keeping alert for ambushes and IEDs at street level, snipers took aim from above inside the towering minarets of mosques. But even when they were caught by machine-gun crossfire, One-Eight overcame all obstacles in the bloody streets of Fallujah.

    Chapter 1 Fallujah 5K

As the holy period of Ramadan approached in the fall of 2004, insurgents increased engagements in Iraq’s volatile Anbar Province once again. On October 21, Col. C.A. Tucker’s RCT-7 Command Element relocated from its al-Asad headquarters, under cover of what the commander called a dirt-fog night, for Camp Baharia, three miles east of Fallujah. A few days later, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines (1/8) and 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion also moved to Baharia; into an area of southern Fallujah where probing attacks were conducted.

With a full brunt of American firepower being brought down upon them, insurgents inside Fallujah undoubtedly felt that another major offensive was imminent by November, and they were right. With Iraqi elections forthcoming in January 2005, powerbrokers in Baghdad and Washington finally realized what Marines already knew: in order for Iraq to stabilize and prosper, Fallujah had to be secured with a major assault, codenamed Operation Phantom Fury.
