About this ebook
Saving Freedom in Health Care is a powerful essay taken from The New York Times best-selling book, Saving Freedom by United States Senator Jim Demint, lauded by conservative leaders Newt Gingrich, Sean Hannity, Oliver North, William Bennett, and Steve Forbes who declared the book "a blueprint for the effort that all concerned Americans must join to restore and protect the freedoms we depend on." If you believe every American should have a health insurance plan he can afford and keep from job to job; health insurance should not depend on employment, health status, or income level; no one should face bankruptcy because of catastrophic illness; people should not be denied health coverage because they are branded ?uninsurable,? then you need to read this essay. The United States—the world’s great bastion of freedom—is sliding toward socialism. Recent high-profile bailouts show the walls between government and the private sector are getting thinner each day. Federal control now extends in various ways to education, healthcare, financial markets, real estate, businesses, and religion. And as out-of-control government spending and debt increase accordingly, America is drained of the economic and political strength its people fought and worked so hard to achieve. But it isn’t too late to save the land of the free.
Saving Freedom is Senator Jim DeMint’s firsthand account of the unsettling socialist shift—behind-the-scenes actions in Congress that are changing the character of our nation. He illuminates key principles of freedom and how they are being compromised by big government. More important, DeMint lays out a complete action plan to reclaim America’s freedom based on legislation that would reduce debt, fix Social Security, and provide a tax credit for every family to buy health insurance. The plan also emphasizes reversing America’s cultural decline by restoring a strong spirit of God and country.

Saving Freedom In Health Care Essay - Jim DeMint
SOCIALISM
Freedom and Socialism
Maintaining stability and strength in a diverse and dynamic nation like the United States requires leaders who can maintain a consensus among our citizens about faith, values, principles, and policies. There will always be tension because values conflict, even those values held by the same individual.
Americans want to reduce wasteful spending and the size of government, but they also want to maintain costly social programs. They want to reduce costly farm subsidies but save the small farmer. They want to eliminate the welfare state but help the poor. They want to crack down on crime by throwing more criminals in jail, but they don’t want to build more prisons (especially in their own backyards). They want everyone to have health care but do not want to pay more taxes for government-run health care.
You Can Have it All
We have been told we can tax, regulate, and sue our businesses more than any other country in the world and still be competitive in a global economy. We have been told the government can set health-care prices and heavily regulate health-care services and still have an efficient, affordable private health-care system. We have been told we can spend every dime in the Social Security and Medicare trust funds on unrelated programs and still keep our promises to seniors.
We have been told we can ban religion, prayer, and faith from schools, businesses, and public places and continue to be a strong and moral nation. We have been told we can educate our children in secular government schools and still have responsible, moral citizens. We have been told we can subsidize unwed births and teach safe sex
to teenagers and still maintain strong families and a commitment to the institution of marriage. We have been told what cannot possibly be!
Now, as we end the first decade of the twenty-first century, the wheels have
