      Chapter One

      The scent of smoke woke Owen Schroeder from a sound sleep. Owen coughed and wheezed as he lost oxygen in his blood…a symptom an asthmatic knew very well. He slid from the bed trying to catch his breath. Whenever his respiratory tract got irritated he secreted a lot of mucus. Though it sounded gross, he didn’t have time to think about it. Something was definitely on fire close by and he had to get out of his thirteenth-floor apartment alive.

      Owen crawled toward the door and inched his hand up to the doorknob. Shit! He snatched it away quickly because it burned the heck out of him. That meant the fire was closer than he thought, so he couldn’t escape that way. The only other way out was through the balcony.

      His coughing continued as he raced to the other side of the room. Owen made it to the glass door, opened it, and crawled out to the small patio. Down below he saw fire trucks, ambulances and other emergency vehicles. He rose and waved his hands frantically to get their attention. Owen tried to shout but his throat burned and his vocal cord spasmed. He took off his white T-shirt to use as a flag. Since
