About this ebook
This eBook is the result of such a period in the life of the author in which he battled with depression and passed through his own ‘dark night of the soul’. This was accompanied by a time of deep introspection during which he had to re-order his life and priorities and find the answers to a number of important questions, including ‘Who am I really?’; ‘What is actually going on in the world?’; ‘What is real?; and ‘What is the true meaning of suffering, life and death?’
This book therefore reflects new perspectives gained by the author during this difficult time when he had to combine and apply all his life-experience and studies in science, philosophy, psychology, metaphysics and theology in order to find answers to these important questions (as well as others). He offers these personal insights as a comfort to readers who may be experiencing the same feelings of loneliness and despair following an equally difficult period in their lives, and also provides practical advice on how to deal with the negativity and emotions that accompany such an experience.

Living on the Edge of Darkness - Jimmy Henderson
Introduction
‘Sometimes, I feel like a mouse running through the maze of life. I can choose to go forward, backwards, or to explore some new path with which I am not familiar. I can even make a wrong decision and end up in a dead end. Fortunately, I can always turn away from this path and find my way back to familiar territory once again. The end result should be that I will eventually find my way out of the labyrinth of emotional confusion and conditioned thinking and reap the rewards of my effort. I suppose it is also possible that some may never find their way through and enter eternity at best doubtful and afraid, or worse, corrupted beyond redemption. And this is certainly no comfort to those who have suffered at the hands of evil’.
J. Henderson
Trying to change ourselves a little bit at a time by learning from our mistakes and their consequences could take us an entire lifetime. Life can be unfair. If all were perfect we would never have setbacks to overcome and therefore not have the opportunity to grow. However, learning by experience is the normal course of events, and if we look carefully at the problems in our day-to-day lives, they often seem to follow a specific pattern or trend. For example, the same bitter experiences with relationships, career or finances can arise time and time again until we are forced into a process of self-evaluation and become aware of the need to make better and more mature choices.
However, a sudden life-changing experience (usually involving extreme humiliation or loss of identity), can also speed up this process of growth and development. This experience is sometimes called the ‘dark night of the soul’, and can come in the form of the end of a marriage or long-term relationship, the shutting down of a promising career, or some other equally traumatic experience. This is a time during which we feel totally shattered, empty and alone, and will virtually be forced to abandon many of our outdated beliefs and ideas, as well as our old sense of self.
Sometimes we can get lost in the intensity of such an experience and struggle for many years to recover. However, if we are able to recognise it for what it is, an opportunity to transcend the ego, we can shorten the period of suffering.
Obviously, it is still important to take the time to fully process the thoughts and feelings relating to such an experience, and for a while we will certainly be mentally, emotionally and spiritually vulnerable and naked. However, when we eventually stand up again, our slates will be clean and we will once again be ready to face life, but this time with a new outlook and a hard-earned maturity.
This publication is the result of such a period in the life of the author in which he battled with depression and passed through his own ‘dark night of the soul’. This was accompanied by a time of deep introspection during which he had to re-order his life and priorities and find the answers to a number of important questions, including ‘Who am I really?’; ‘What the hell is actually going on in the world?’; ‘What is real?; and ‘What is the true meaning of suffering, life and death?’
In addition to his strange blending of approaches, the author also makes extensive use of prose, myth, allegory and
