A Bother and a Brother
Ember’s arm blazed, and the rest of her body shrieked with pain as she shivered on her belly. Mud seeped into her pores. Grit rubbed against her teeth.
Not her favorite way to spend a Friday evening.
She smelled a storm in the air and finally pried her eyes open. An apparently nine-year-old girl sat beside her, Ember’s backpack in her lap. Mir. Miranda’s honey-gold skin and blue-black hair had something eerie about them even in daylight.
In the twilight, the eyes that were dark brown by day glowed obsidian. Ember wondered how the changeling’s host parents ever believed her human.
Careful, sealgirl,
Miranda drawled. Don’t make me tell wolfboy you bit off more than you could chew.
Ember’s laugh was borderline bark-hysterical. Her shivers became shudders.
Miranda sighed, her small shoulders slumping. Child,
she scolded lightly. You’ll kill yourself, you keep abusing your change like that.
What’s my change meant for, then?
Ember asked, voice hoarse. Why can I change whenever I want, if it isn’t good for me?
Mir said to the evening sky, God save us from idealistic brats.
Ember frowned even though it hurt. The gator would’ve eaten that kid.
Miranda shrugged. Or not, had you called the police instead of gone after it, yourself.
