Leaving Blue 5.1 Part 2 - Thadd Evans
Chapter One
When our ship was closer to D36, I noticed that Rhea’s hair had reached her waist. Now it was light brown, matching Alan’s. Her pink-orange face resembled his.
The first time I met Irea, her hair was dark-sienna. Now it was curly, black, just like mine. All of these changes in the translator’s appearance, unpredictable events, surprised me.
Weeks later, because Rhea’s face had changed, she resembled Alan.
Darwin worked with Jen, talking about navigation and computer languages. His face gradually morphed until it was similar to hers. However, because of the language barrier, I wondered how well they understood each other.
I spoke into my vtp. Jen, it’s me. I need to check in with you regarding Darwin’s progress.
I understand. He is slow, yet he keeps improving. Now he understands gravitational pull, flight path creation, and strange attractor movement inside solar winds more thoroughly. He even knows how to explain those concepts in English.
Amazing.
Strange attractors, irregular shapes, were hard to measure. They changed constantly, interacting with their surroundings. Predicting what they would do next was difficult, nearly impossible.
Chapter Two
When our ship was just over a million miles from D36, Thomas’s face materialized on my vtp.
He scowled. The motors in the solar sail’s titanium ring have just shut off. As a result, it won’t open all the way.
We have to figure out how to restart them in the next eleven hours or we can’t take another flight path because the ship is moving too fast.
If Exp One keeps following our current route, the ship won’t reach D Thirty-Six.
I flinched, shocked by the news and responded to his message. Understood.
An hour later, on my vtp, an incoming call, Thomas’s face, enlarged.
His bloodshot eyes blinked. This is my latest update.
Any progress?
No. After I opened OSS One software, it switched on some motors. Yet the ring won’t open any farther. Someone will have to crawl down the cable and inspect the ring.
Thanks for the update.
I sent out text emails to all the crew, asking for a volunteer.
In the corner of my vtp, Joel’s face enlarged.
He scowled. The RM can’t climb down the main cable because their hands weren’t designed to hold onto it.
I paused as chills ran down my spine. Understood. Thank you for the quick response.
No problem.
I sent out text emails to all the crew, explaining the robot’s shortcomings.
Caldur’s voice, a relaxed one, came out of my vtp.
I’ll do it.
I spoke into the device. Permission granted.
At the top of my monitor, on Exp 1’s tail, a foreshortened figure, Caldur, moved toward the ring. Then he climbed onto the top of the Y shaped line, Cable A. Soon he was closer to the sail, more than halfway there.
As I watched in horror, Caldur fell off—stopped, dangling by a tether, a line that was attached to his waist. Then he started up the tether, climbing slowly.
Near the corner of my vtp, Naartin’s face came forward, enlarging.
In his eyes, icons showed that he was frightened. Much to my surprise, the icons changed, indicating that he wanted to succeed, no matter what. I’ll go outside and help Caldur.
Be careful. Make sure your tether is in perfect condition.
Although I had memorized several Reen hieroglyphics, it was important to learn more of them.
Near the top of the screen, a tiny figure, Caldur reached out—grasped Naartin’s outstretched hand and pulled him onto the cable. Soon both of them, tiny silhouettes surrounded by an ocean of stars, started heading toward the ship.
David’s face, a grainy image, glided across my vtp.
He stared at me, his face tense. If we lose Naartin and Caldur, we’ll never make it to D Thirty-Six!
Understood. But someone has to repair the sail.
David glowered.
Chapter Three
Another real time video appeared. At the bottom of it, Caldur and Naartin opened a hatch, entering Exp 1.
Near the edge of a topaz screen, a new image, a video of the sail popped up. The sail hadn’t opened any farther.
Joel’s face materialized on my vtp.
He blinked. I’ve modified an RM. Now its name is Eleven. It will repair the sail.
I nodded. Thanks for the good news.
Near the top of a gray screen, I noticed a five foot tall RM, 11. It was climbing down the Y cable. After reaching the bottom, Eleven crawled onto one of many spread out cables and put its feet together, around the cable. Soon Eleven inched down, advancing toward the ring.
Much to my surprise—the robot fell inside the sail and started twirling!
I blurted, speaking into my vtp. Thomas, did you see that?
Yes.
Fortunately, the opposite end of the robot’s tether, a line fastened to his waist, was attached to one of the cables. As the camera zoomed in, Eleven began climbing slowly, going up the tether. It would take about ten hours for the RM to reach Exp 1.
David’s voice came out of the vtp.
Shit! If that ring doesn’t open any farther within the next few hours, I’ll climb down the cable myself.
Wait a while. If you do that and break your arm or the tether snaps and we lose you, we’ll be worse off than ever.
"I’ll wait."
Later that day, David’s face scrolled across my vtp.
He grinned. The ring has opened all the way! I don’t believe it!
I smiled. What a relief.
Within a couple of hours, Caldur brought Eleven back inside. After the
