About this ebook

On 15 November 1899, near the start of the Anglo-Boer War, an armoured train manned by British soldiers and containing a young British journalist named Winston Churchill ground its way towards Chieveley in the misty hinterland of Natal, South Africa. The Boers, those fearsome, brave Afrikaner farmers known for their horsemanship and marksmanship, had proved to be a fearsome and formidable force. So as the train steamed along the track, the soldiers were well aware that the often
elusive enemy could strike at any time.

And then this – the armoured train huffing importantly towards them through the sodden early morning air, the light still grey with the sun barely peeping over the horizon. The train rattled over the trestle bridge spanning the Blaauw Krantz River, heading north.

The burghers waited behind the shelter afforded by the hills overlooking the railway line and watched as the train chugged slowly past. Close-up – so close they could smell the soot and glimpse the faces of the men inside the armoured carriages – the noise
