Biblical Index to Section II
This book is dedicated to my dog Rebel and to all who have shown me reflections of God
A Reflection of God
Like a dog with a favourite bone
you refuse to give me up,
even run to fetch me and show me off
to your most honoured guests.
Even though I am chewed round the edges
and have lost my savour,
I can never lose my Saviour
or seem to you dull and discardable.
Even though I am a Rebel,
by many of my actions
dishonouring your name,
and have often chosen to ignore your commands,
still you call me back
and throw the ball of life for me again.
You doggedly seek me out
in the thickets in which I trap myself
and wade in to rescue me
from the yellow bog, the silted pond.
And you have, like the best of gundogs,
a soft, a gentle mouth
so as to retrieve me without further bruising.
Truly there was never such a friend,
such a trusting or trustworthy companion
for all my days. Let us walk together
and explore the world.
I
Glimpses of Grace
Steps on my Journey
Via Positiva
Go forward into the day, my soul
and do not fear,
though the night-time be tormenting
or the morning mournful.
Go forward
with courage and conviction,
carrying your cross
and knowing that Christ has gone before you.
Go forward—
even a single step of faith
will take you further
than any amount of wandering
among worldly cares.
Go forward
though the earth seem to melt away
before you,
for as you place your feet there
the bridge will be built and buttressed
beneath you.
No ifs, no buts,
