Summary of Communication

INTRODUCTION

Communication can be considered one of the building blocks of our society. It is what allows people to connect daily through the sharing of knowledge, thoughts, feelings, and wants. Ever since the first grunts shared between primitive men, it is apparent that the process of communication is intertwined into every part of our lives. Without communication, how does the mother know what her baby needs? How does the boss let his employee know what is needed for the project? How does the fast food worker know what you want for lunch? It’s all about the communication!

WHAT IS COMMUNICATION?

Communication is the process wherein people share their thoughts or opinions in different ways. It is not true that people can only communicate through words. People can communicate in other ways, e.g., a hand gesture or a simple nod. Communication helps people become understood.

What many do not realize is that communication can extend beyond the active participants within a conversation. This means that even if you are just communicating with one person, there is always a possibility that a third party is hearing what you are saying or is able to decipher any non-verbal signals that you have given. Communication can be done intentionally, but sometimes it is also unintentional.

There are three steps that people undergo when they are communicating. Second is the delivery process, which is the method used to deliver the thought process to the intended receiver. Possible methods used could include words, actions, or signals. Third is the receiving process, where the intended receiver understands the thought process effectively.

When these three processes are successfully accomplished, an effective communication has been completed. However, there are instances when a person’s message can get lost in amongst the words and signals. Some of these reasons miscommunication may occur include the following:
